Pre-Assessment for Science Unit

Short Summary:
The pre-assessment for science was given to the students on November 17, 2020. The students

were given this via paper-pencil. There were some students that came to the back of the classroom and

sat with the teacher candidate at the kidney shaped table. Only two students were allowed back at a

time due to the current pandemic and rules put it in place for the classroom. The students had the

questions read aloud to them when they had all received the paper copy. The students were instructed

to circle one choice per question. When looking at the results of the pre-assessment, this helps the

teacher candidate understand what the students have understood as prior knowledge and what needs

to be covered in the subject matter. This allows the lessons to be developed effectively for unit week per

the needs of the students in the classroom.

The pre-assessment that was given to the students was used to gain an understanding from a

teacher’s standpoint on the previous knowledge that students in the classroom had on the different

forms of energy. It was found that 6 out of the 14 students knew the definition for energy, 4 out of 14

could identify the types of energy, 7 out of 14 knew the type of energy that can be seen, 11 out of 14

identified the type of energy a campfire is, and 9 out of 14 knew the correct terminology for the word

heat. For the two students that are observed, they both received the same pre-assessment (no

differentiated scoring guide) that the whole class did to assess the basic understanding of the content.

Since there was only one correct choice per question, I decided to use one same scoring guide for the

whole class. When looking at student one from the observations, this student answered the last two

questions correctly that dealt with the energy form of heat. This shows that the student has little

background knowledge on the topic. Student two scored a 4/5 on the pre-assessment, demonstrating an

understanding of the subject matter, just struggled to determine the type of energy that one can see.
