What This Module is About

This module is prepared to help you understand the importance

of mathematics in our daily lives. It enables you to apply the concepts
and skills you’ve learned from the practical and challenging exercises
provided.

In here, you can find activities and exercises that will help you
develop the mastery of multiplying up to 3 – digit numbers by up to 2 –
digit numbers with or without regrouping. The activities are modified and
is suited for you to answer independently.

4i
What I Need to Know

In this lesson, you will deal with multiplying numbers up to 3 – digit

numbers by 2 – digit numbers with and without regrouping. Always
remember that in multiplication, the position of the factors does not
affect the answer.

You will be using the lattice method, place value chart, long and
short method of multiplying numbers.

An illustration of a lattice method is shown below

A place value chart is shown below.

Lesson
(Multiplying Numbers)
1
In this lesson, you are going to learn multiplying 3 – digit numbers
by up to 2 – digit numbers without regrouping.

What’s In

One Saturday morning, 32 people entered Robinson Mall every

hour. How many people entered in 3 hours?

Solution:
32 people every hour
x 3 hours
96 people in 3 hours

What’s New

The seller opened 21 boxes of apples. Each box had 122 apples.
How many apples were there in all?

How did you come up with the correct answer?

What is your answer?

8
What is It

The seller opened 21 boxes of apple. Each box had 122 apples.
How many apples were there in all?

There are several ways to come up with the correct answer. Let
us use first the lattice method.

Lattice Method:
a. Draw a 3 by 2 rectangle and position the factors as shown below.

1 2 2

b. Multiply each digit above by each digit on the side. Write the digit’s
product as shown:
1 2 2

2
2 4 4
1
1 2 2

c. Add down the numbers along the diagonals.

1 2 2

2 4 4 2

1
2 1 2 2
5 6 2

d. The answer, read counter clockwise, is 2 562.

9
Using the place value chart :
Step 1. Multiply 1 Hundreds, 2 Tens and 2 Ones by One.
Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones
1 2 2
x 2 1
1 2 2 1 x 122

Step 2. Multiply 1 Hundreds, 2 Tens and 2 Ones by 2 Tens.

Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones

1 2 2
2 1
1 2 2
2 4 4 2 x 122
Step 3. Add the partial products to get the final product

Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones

1 2 2
2 1
1 2 2 Partial Product
2 4 4 Partial Product
2 5 6 2 Final Product

The Long Method:

122 = 100 + 20 + 2
X 21 = 20 + 1
100+ 20 + 2
+ 2 000 + 400+ 40_____
2 000 + 500+ 60 + 2 = 2 562

Short method:

122
x 21
122
+ 244__
2 562

10
What’s More

A. Find the product of 211 x 33 by using:

1. Lattice method 3. Long Method

2. Using the place value chart d. Short method

Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones

What I Have Learned

How do you multiply –digit number by –digit number?

To multiply 3 – digit number by 2 – digit number, multiply the ones

place of the multiplier to each of the multiplicand to get the partial
product. Then multiply the tens digit of the multiplier to each of the
multiplicand to get the second partial product. Finally, add the partial
products to determine the final result.

11
What I Can Do

Direction: Match the product in Column A with the multiplication

sentence in Column B. Write your answer on the space provided before
each number.

A B

_____1) 9072 a. 133 x 33

_____2) 5082 b. 432 x 21
_____3)7424 c. 134 x 12
_____4)4389 d. 232 x 32
_____5)1608 e. 231 x 22

B. Solve the following using any of the methods you’ve learned a while
ago.

1. 322 2. 342 3. 144 4. 894 5. 211

x 32 x 22 x 22 x 11 x 33

Lesson
Multiplying Numbers
2 with regrouping
In this lesson, you are going to multiply 3 – digit numbers by up to
2 – digit numbers with regrouping.

What’s In

Roberto harvested 105 kilos of Palay. He sold them at 16 pesos

a kilo. How much did Roberto earn?

Solution:

The answer is: Roberto earned 1 680 pesos.

What’s New

Wyndham receives a daily allowance of Php185. How much does

he receive in 25 days?

13
What is It

In the previous lesson you have learned the different ways in

finding the answer. Let us try again but this time with regrouping.

Lattice Method:
a. Draw a 3 by 2 rectangle and position the factors as shown below.

1 8 5

b. Multiply each digit above by each digit on the side. If the product is
1-digit number write the result in the lower portion of the diagram. On
the other hand, if the product is a 2-digit number write the tens digit in
the upper portion of the diagram and the ones digit in the lower portion.
1 8 5
1 1
2
2 6 0
4 2 5
5 0 5

c. Add down the numbers along the diagonals. If you need to carry a
number, add it to the next group of diagonals.

1 8 5
1 1
6 2
2 0
4 2
4 5 0 5

6 2 5
d. The answer, read counter clockwise, is 4 625

14
Using the place value chart as shown below:

Step1. Multiply 1 Hundreds, 2 Tens and 2 Ones by 4 Ones.

Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones

1 8 5
2 5
x 5 x 185
9 2 5

Step 2. Multiply 1 Hundreds, 2 Tens and 2 Ones by 2 Tens.

3 7 0 2 x 185

Step 3. Add the partial products to get the final product

Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones

1 8 5
2 1
1 9 2 5 Partial Product
+ 3 7 0 Partial Product
4 6 2 5

X 21 = 20 + 5
500+ 400 + 25
+ 2 000 +1 600+ 100_____
2000 +2 100+ 500 + 25 = 4 625

15
Short method:
