1 Introduction

1 Introduction

This chapter gives an introduction to the cables of the BSC. It comprises the
following main parts:

Cable Sets

Cabinets

Cable Codes.

3BK 20193 AAAA TQZZA Ed. 06 11 / 69

1 Introduction

1.1 Cable Sets

There are four main cable sets in the BSC:
Intra-rack cables

Inter-rack cables

External Cables

Front Panel Connections.

Some cable types are used in more than one cable set. In these cases, the
cables are described only once. References are made in the descriptions of the
appropriate cable set to the description of the cable which is used in both sets.
Some Intra-rack cables are in fact jumper plugs. In this case, the connections
are made internally within the plug. There are no external connections to
the plug.

1.2 Cabinets
Racks are called cabinets when doors and side panels are fitted.
There are three types of BSC cabinet, designated A, B and C. The cabinets
are sometimes designated 1, 2 and 3. Cabinet A is the first cabinet. It is the
only cabinet which contains the CPRC PBAs. Cabinets B and C are added to
extend the BSC in some configurations.
Each cabinet is fully equipped with the intra-rack cables, even when it is only
partially equipped with PBAs and subracks.

1.3 Cable Codes

Each cable has a 12 character cable code which gives its identity, length, etc.
The BSC cables have different cable codes as shown in the following examples:

211 03157 ABBA (connects Group Switch, planes 0 and 1 to GS2 planes
0 and 1)

214 07680 DAAA (connects line input to 75 Ohms Abis input)

3BK 07948 GLAA (connects BSC Terminal to CPRC PBA via the RS-232
interface).
Cables with 211, 214 and For cables whose identifier starts with 211, 214 or 215, the first three letters of
215 Identifiers the four letter suffix indicate the length of the cable as shown in the table below.
X(1), X(2) and X(3) in the table indicate the position of the letter in the suffix.
The cable length is obtained using the following algorithm:
Cable Length = length X(1) + length X(2) + length X(3)
For example, suffix AFGA indicates that the cable is 0 + 5 + 0.6 = 5.6 m long.
The last letter indicates the variant of the cable. Jumper plugs do not have
cables and the suffixes do not indicate the length.

Table 1: Cable Code Suffix Designations (No Multiplier)

Cables with 3BK For cables whose identifier starts with 3BK, the length of the cable is indicated
Identifiers by the first two letters of the four letter suffix. The first letter of the suffix
indicates the base length of the cable plus the step length. The second letter
indicates a multiplier. The cable length is obtained using the following algorithm:
Cable Length = Base length + (Step Length * Multiplier)
For example, suffix GLAA indicates that the cable is 10 + (0.5 * 10) = 15.0 m
long.
The table below lists the meanings of the letters.

First Letter Base Length (m) Step Length (m) Second Letter Multiplier

1.4 Multi-Cables
In some BSCs, multi-cables are used to replace either 6 or 12 external cables.
Multi-cables comprise a number of cables that are bundled together to form
a single cable. In this document, both the single cables and the multi-cables
which replace them are described.

2 Intra-rack Cables

2.1 Introduction
The BSC uses the following types of intra-rack cables:

Switch cables between the:

Access Switches (ASs) and the Group Switch (GS) stage 1 planes

GS stage 1 planes and GS stage 2 planes

2 MHz reference clock cables between the DTCC PBAs and the System
BCLA PBAs

Clock and broadcast bus distribution cables

Connections between DTCC and BCLA for clock monitoring and control

Cables which route the convertor alarms and "plug presence detection"
signals to the Abis Terminal Sub-Unit

SCSI bus A and B cables

Internal alarm connections

Power connections.

The BSC uses some cables and jumper plugs for more than one purpose. For
example, the same cable type is used both for switching and for the distribution
of the clock and broadcast bus.
Tables 3, 4 and 5 give examples of the intra-rack cables in each of the BSC
racks. The headers in the tables are described in the following paragraphs.
Cable Sequence Number The cable sequence number is an 8-character field. The significance of the
characters are:
1 shows the use of the cable

2 and 3 show the cable function

4, 5 and 6 show the rack location of the cable start or end

7 and 8 show the sequence number.

Cable Part Number The cable part number is a 14-character field. The significance of the
characters are:

1, 2 and 3 show the prefix

4 and 5 are blank

6 to 10 show the number

11 to 14 show the suffix (in some cases the suffix indicates the length of the
cable, see Section 1.3).

C This is a single character field that specifies the cable connector of a

multi-ended cable assembly. A colon (:) indicates that there is no connector,
e.g., when the cable is connected to the distribution frame.
Function This field shows the function(s) of the cable.
Rack Location This field gives the room and the rack location.
Cable Termination This is a 10-character field which describes the cable termination within a
cabinet or distribution frame. The significance of the characters is:

2 Intra-rack Cables

1 and 2 give the Subrack Assembly Unit identity

3 and 4 (::) indicate that the cable terminates in a SAU

5 and 6 give the connector position in the SAU

7 gives the segment

8 gives the column

9 and 10 give the terminal.

The abbreviations used in the tables are:

3 Inter-rack Cables

3 Inter-rack Cables

This chapter describes the inter-rack cabling. It comprises the following main
parts:

Introduction
Switch inter-rack cables

Clock inter-rack cables.

3 Inter-rack Cables

3.1 Introduction
There is only one type of inter-rack cable, 211 03157 XXXA (see Section
2.3), which:
Connects the GS1 and GS2 elements (switch inter-rack cables)
Distributes the clock and broadcast bus (clock inter-rack cables).

3.2 Switch Inter-Rack Cables

The table below shows the switch inter-rack cables between rack A, B and C for
all the 6 possible BSC Configurations. The table provides the link addresses
and the start and end position of the cables.
The Subrack/Connector column is explained with the example below.
07::02BA09, where:
07 is the subrack

02 is the slot position

BA is the connector

09 is the plug address.

5 Front Panel Connectors

5 Front Panel Connectors

This chapter describes the front panel connectors of the PBAs. It also
describes the cables used to connect the various interfaces to the connectors.
The chapter comprises the following main parts:

Introduction

RS-232 Interface and Man Machine Interface (MMI)

X.25 Low Speed Interface

X.25 High Speed Interface

X.25 Modem Interface

TSCA Modem Interface.

3BK 20193 AAAA TQZZA Ed. 06 43 / 69

5 Front Panel Connectors

5.1 Introduction
CPRC PBA There are two connectors on the front panel of the CPRC PBA:

9-pin female CANON D-subminature connector, which connects the CPRC

to the BSC Terminal. This is the RS-232 interface.

25-pin female CANON D-subminature connector, which connects the

CPRC to one of the following:
X.25 low speed (up to 9600 bit/s) synchronous transmission link, via a
V.24/V.28 Modem or a Null-Modem

X.25 high speed (up to 64 kbit/s) transmission link via a high speed
modem using X.21 circuits.

Each type of connection has a different cable. Table 8 lists the various cables
which can be connected to the CPRC front panel connectors. Figure 30 shows
the cables connected to the front panel of the CPRC PBAs. The cables are
described in detail in the following sections.
Other PBAs The following PBAs have a single front panel connector:

Ater Submulitplexer Type B (ASMB)

Base Station Interface Unit Type A (BIUA)

Transcoder Submultiplexer Controller Type A (TSCA).

The 9-pin female CANON D-subminature connector, connects the PBA to

the Transmission Terminal. Figure 30 also shows the cable connected to
the front panel of the TSCA PBA.
