MONITORING OF INTRAVENOUS FLUIDS

A. Inpatient (unifusion)
1. Using the accompanying label, determine the injection area of the infusion bag
or bottle.
2. Write the medication prescribed for the patient on the label of the infusion bag
or bottle.
3. Fill in the name of the test and retridication diet in the patient and give it to the
patient.
4. Write down the date/time it was taken on the label of the intravenous fluid bag
or bottle.
5. Sterilize the appliance in a sterile oven when not in use.
6. After completing the installation return the tool that was taken to the
labolatory.
B. Inpatient (infusion)
1. Using the accompanying label, determine the injection area of the infusion bag
or bottle.
2. Write the medication prescribed for the patient on the label of the infusion bag
or bottle.
3. Fill in the name of the test and retridication dt in the patient and give it to the
patient.
4. Write the date/time it was picked up on the label of the infusion fluid bag or
bottle.
5. Disinfect with an alcohol swab and stop the flow of fluids
6. Do the injection by inserting a syringe needle into a bag or bottle of
intravenous fluid.
7. After finishing pull out the syringe and mix the solution by turning the bag or
bottle of liquid carefully and slowly
8. Set the return flow rate
9. Document the time/date of action in the label of the IV fluid bag or bottle
10. Return the appropriate equipment and equipment request list to the labolatory
C. Patient being discharged
1. Using the accompanying label, determine the injection area of the infusion bag
or bottle.
2. Write the medication prescribed for the patient on the label of the infusion bag
or bottle.
3. Give the patient a leaflet or poster for monitoring procedures for intravenous
fluids.
4. If possible inform the patient of the dangers associated with the equipment
used in monitoring intravenous fluids.
