Title SIOP Model Comprehensible Input

Grade Level 4th grade

Summary of the Lesson This lesson uses direct, explicit instruction and the
gradual release of responsibility framework (ex., I do,
we do, you do) to teach students about the SIOP
model and the importance of comprehensible input.
Standards: (as CC.1.5.4.F –– Add audio recordings and visual displays
applicable) to presentations when appropriate to enhance the
development of main ideas or themes.
PA Standards
CC.1.5.4.G –– Demonstrate command of the
conventions of standard English when speaking based
on grade 4 level and content.
Essential Questions How can teachers support comprehensible input?

Objectives Students will be able to:


 Explain the concepts behind comprehensible
input.
 Demonstrate effective comprehensible input
techniques.

Vocabulary: SIOP Model: Sheltered Instruction Observation


Protocol (SIOP)
Comprehensible Input: being able to understand what
is being said despite not knowing all the words.
Estimated Time 50 minutes

Materials Required - Comprehensible Input Nearpod

Procedure  BEFORE Segment:

1) Anticipatory Set: Students will activate prior


knowledge by sharing what they remember
about the SIOP model on a collaboration board
on Nearpod. The teacher will review some of
their answers.

2) Preview objectives: Our objectives for this


lesson are (displayed on the board): Students
will: 1) Explain the concepts behind
comprehensible input; 2) Demonstrate effective
comprehensible input techniques.

 DURING Segment:

3) Questioning: Teacher will begin the Nearpod by


reviewing SIOP and explaining comprehensible
input. Students will watch a short video and
answer a multiple choice and open ended
response question while watching.

4) Modeling: The teacher will model example


responses to the open-ended questions.

5) Checking for Understanding: Throughout the


lesson, there will be open ended questions that
students must answer. Students will also play a
variety of review games throughout the lesson
such as “Time to Climb,” a fill-in-the-blank
puzzle, and a matching game.

 AFTER Segment:
6) Formative Assessment: Each student will say a
sentence aloud and using gestures and proper
enunciation to demonstrate comprehensible
input.

7) Closing statement: Today we learned about


Comprehensible Input from the SIOP model.
Next week, we will look further into the SIOP
model.

Formative Assessment The teacher will assess students through their


responses throughout the presentation (short answer
responses, fill-in-the-blank answers, etc.) Teacher will
also assess students on how they demonstrate
comprehensible input by saying a sentence aloud and
using proper gestures and enunciation.
