Men’s /Unisex Fat Quarter Scrub Hat Sewing Pattern

www.scrubhatpatterns.com

Supplies Needed:
• 1 Fat Quarter of Fabric or a
piece of fabric that measures
18 x 22”

• Thread to match

• 1/4” width elastic small piece

about 6-7 “ long

• Tape measure

• Scissors

• Sewing machine

• Seam ripper

• Printer (print patterns at 100%

scaling or your hat size will be READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE STARTING
COMPLETELY off)

• Use 3/8” seam allowance

throughout unless
otherwise noted

A specific note about sizing on this hat. You will notice in the picture on the next page, the
finished length of the brim. (The model’s head measured 24” around.) If you carefully follow the
instructions the hat will turn out this size. If you know that a 23” long brim is not going to be long
enough after measuring your head or way to big after measuring your head, you can use a 1/4”
seam allowance which will give you more room. If that is not enough then add to the length on
the brim pattern AND crown pattern piece (equally on both) to your liking. Add size from flat
bottom of crown and back (skinny) end of back brim pieces.
If hat is too big use 5/8” seam allowance or larger if need be. The 3/8” seam allowance is already
built in. If hat is still too large (it really shouldn't be if printer settings are correct) the simply
reduce the length on the brim pattern AND crown pattern piece (equally on both) to your liking.
Reduce size from flat bottom of crown and back (skinny) end of back brim pieces. Be CERTAIN
that you print your patterns at 100% scaling and check that the 1” box measures 1” on patterns. If
it doesn’t then it will not print at correct size.
In this photo I wanted
to show you some of
the finished sizes of
the pieces after you’ve
done what you need
to do but before you
assemble. Simply for
reference. This same
blue hat fit my hus-
band’s head in the
photo.

These are what your pieces will

look like once they are cut out.
If your choice of fabric has
designs in it that are faced a
certain way or you want a
particular design to be at the
front of your hat, then pay
attention to how you lay your
brim piece on the fold and be
sure half the design shows up
on one side of fold, and half on
the other side of fold for it to be
centered correctly.

Grab your two side (or

back, same thing) brim
pieces and transfer
your pattern hem
markings onto the
pattern pieces. You can
use either chalk, pins or
I use a Frixion fabric
pen that when heat is
applied, the mark
disappears. I LOVE this
pen!
Bottom of crown where the elastic is. It measures about 2.5” across once I’ve tightened and
stitched it. You may want it tighter or looser depending how YOU like it. It’s possible you may
not want elastic at all.
Your hat is finished and should
now look like the blue hat below.
If you love that fabric it is from
Paintbrush Fabric Studios. It
comes from the fabric line Food
Trucks by Jeannie Phan. It’s so
cute.

Model’s head 24” around
