Peter Eisenman: In dialog with architects and philosophers

Edited by Vladan Djokić & Petar Bojanić

In the present work, it shows a critical analysis of the interview with the architect Peter

Einsman by Aleksandar Kusic and Natasha Jankovic. Architecture through the years has

undergone changes in the thinking of those who practice it. The world of the same has

evolved over time, leading to the future, despite being uncertain, is suggestive of an

innovative change thanks to the new generation of young architects who will have to face

new experiences, as well as a once, happened during modernism post-modernity. Even

so, it is necessary not to forget the precedents that had a great influence on architectural

design in the past. The vision towards the future, with its new technologies and others,

cannot erase from memory that knowledge that forms the basis of education. It is those

who learn about the precedents and know about discipline who turns out to be

successful because in this way they can innovate and change history for something

better. With the new programs of the digital age, it can often seem unnecessary to look

back, which would end up resulting in a serious mistake.

Change has always existed, those post-modernists knew that they could not hold on to

their ideas for long, since something new would come. The renowned architect Reem

Koolhaas, for Peter Einseman is equivalent to what Le Corbusier would be today. His

position falls on the opposition of form and program, as opposed to the more limited

opposition of form and meaning. Einseman considers that no function can exist without a

building or vice versa, the critical mechanism that transforms in architecture must be

evaluated. How the spaces are united and organized, what poetic meaning is given to it,

and how they exist together is worth more than simply what they are, “People stand

vertically on the ground, the ground is often a piece of information ... but there is always

the idea of ground, not a literal ground itself, but the idea of the ground. " (Einseman,

2014) I also think it is important to highlight how the floor is emphasized, being an

essential word within architecture, since it can “be about what architecture is today and in

the future… as we build in this Earth, how and in what way the Earth is conceptualized

becomes important. " (Einseman, 2014)
