It had the famous stie suspension and it was fast, mainly because the armour was quite thin. The most interesting thing isthe fact it could run without tracks as the front two road wheels provided traction and steering. It was the main Russian tank in service when operation Barbarossa started in 1941 where it ‘suffered heavily against the more powerful German tanks ‘The Tamiya kt is easy to build even from the box, it's a well detailed kit and some photo-etch parts are also included. The term has been used historically to describe the condition in Eastern Europe. Literal translation of the term isthus closest to - loss of ways: de-roading, During this period, the large flatlands become extremely muddy and marshy, especially the unpaved roads. There are actually two Rasputitsa seasons, one in the spring and then again in the autumn, the latter however has a historical relevance as it stopped two advancing invasion armies. General Mud or Marshal Mud not only stopped the French Napoleonic invasion in 1812, italso became ‘a great hindrance for the German advance on Moscow in 1941. Throughout the war General Mud had a significant strategic impact, ‘making wide scale offensive operations almost impossible. Ifyou view war time pictures of the Rasputitsa season you often see dramatic scenes with vehicles stuck in deep mud and men and horses trying to salvage the stuck vehicle. Needless to say this Is also an interesting subject for us modelers. Not only to display interesting scenes but also providing an opportunity for some heavy weathering with mud and wet effects. Creating such scenes is rather easy and we are going to discuss the matter with the ald of two models. With the Opel Blitz you see the final results, while we use the Bissing NAG 450 for the step by step guide. 56 / TANKER 0S | MUD & EARTH BUSSING NAG 450 ‘We are using this model to show how to best incorporate a truck into a muddy base I finished this model in an interesting camouflage pattern consisting of dark yellow stripes over a dark grey base. What we need isa piece of Styrodur, or any other foam like material, which you can find in any hardware store ata rather low price. They are usually sold in big plates so the frst thing to do isto cut out a piece in the appropriate size for the vehicle, Then you cut out the grooves caused by the travelling vehicles. With a long bladed hobby knife this is not a difficult task. Place the model into the groves to check ifthe vehicle will actually “submerge” into the base. When necessary, deepen the areas where the wheels touch the ground ‘to ensure that the model has @ “deep sit”. When you are satisfied with the result the next step willbe creating a muddy surface. In this case | like to use Tamiya texture paint. It not only has a nice grainy texture itis also colored in a muddy tone. Itis acrylic based and dies very quickly. You can also dilute it with water to ease the application by brush. There are many other comparable products on the ‘market for this task. Apply the paste evenly over the entire area. In the next step the model will be incorporated into the base. After placing the model into its designated place we need to fill the gaps around the wheels. After ample drying time we can apply a fair coat of AK's Fresh Mud, this contains of glossy dark brown enamel paint which is exactly what we need. Again, you can choose other products, even oil paints. Just make sure the chosen tone is darker than that previously applied. Next we apply the same paint onto the ‘vehicles, o completely blend it into its surroundings. The paint will be applied by brush for heavier accumulations and via the speckling technique to create fine specks of wet mud. This effect also contributes to the impression that the vehicle is grinding its way through heavy wet mud, Finally we enhance the wet look with the aid of glossy acrylic gel. Once dry we have a glossy wet looking surface ‘adding to the impression of wet mud, looking wet but being dry to the touch. Once finished, you can paint the sides in matt black ‘acrylic paint. Please do not use solvent based paints. The thinner may be too aggressive eating its way into the Styrofoam. Only a few simply steps were required to get an impressive and cheap result. ‘Ona piece of foam lines are drawn that need tobe cut out grooves caused by traveling vehiles ‘The grooves are careful cutout by a hobby knife 3 és : %, "S Sy Nay “10H s g 1.
