Using homophones correctly

Using Homophones
• Print out the worksheet and make a copy for each student.
• To begin the lesson, write and cover up the following sentences on the board:
Please meat my friend, Annie. Anne is knew to our neighborhood. She came here last weak with her
sun, Frank.
• eeping the material on the board hidden, tell the students that you are going to read them a short
K
paragraph. Instruct them to listen for mistakes. Read the paragraph that you wrote on the board (which
they can’t see) aloud to the students.
• Ask the students if they heard any mistakes. (There are none to be heard.)
• Reveal the paragraph on the board and read it again to the students.
• A
sk if they can see any mistakes now. Explain that the mistakes are due to spelling errors.
meat should be meet, knew should be new, weak should be week, and sun should be son.
• xplain to the students that homophones are words that sound the same but have different spellings
E
and meanings. Tell the students that in order not to make spelling mistakes in their writing, they
should study pairs of homophones, both their spelling and meanings. In addition, students need to
know that their computer’s spell-checker won’t catch homophone words that are used incorrectly.
• Hand out the worksheet and read the instructions with the students.
• Tell them to do the exercise and suggest that they use their dictionaries, if necessary, for help.
• Review the answers with the students.
• Brainstorm for other homophones with the students. Below are some you might mention:
ate / eight hole / whole theirs / there’s
buy / by / bye mail / male where / wear
cell / sell peace / piece no / know
choose / chews rap / wrap weigh / way
four / for scene / seen right / write
guest / guessed site / sight red / read
