Oral presentation – The Story behind a name

Starbucks

Slide 1:
So… I would like to start my oral presentation with a little game.
I think we all know this famous game called: Logo Quiz, where you have to guess the
brand just by seeing the logo, and that’s what we are going to do…
We are going to guess the brand! I’m going to show you a picture and you are going to tell
me which brand is it. Ready? 3, 2, 1…
(Show the picture and wait for the answer)
So… Let’s see what the correct answer is….

Slide 2:
STARBUCKS! Correct, easy right?
Well, I think we all know Starbucks, right? It’s delicious! But, have you ever think about
the origin of the name? So… where those the name Starbucks came from?
Let’s think together!

Slide 3:
So… Here we have the name Starbucks… What happens if you split the word right in the
middle?
Let’s see… If you pay attention you can notice two really common words in English.
Such as Star and bucks, right? This is quite interesting; have you ever think about this?
Well… Unfortunately, let me tell you that this is not the true origin of the name
Starbucks…
It would be pretty easy, don’t you think?
Slide 4:
So… That’s what I’m going to talk you about today: The Story behind the name Starbucks!
Let’s begin…

Slide 5:
Everything started many years ago with these three friends that had a small coffee
business. The Starbucks Founders…
(Mention the names of the founders)
They were, respectively: A History Teacher, an English Teacher and a writer.
They all had in common an incredible knowledge in literature, as they loved reading
novels!

Slide 6:
One day, they set up a meeting to decide the name of the brand and started making a list
of possible options. Suddenly, one of them thought that “Cargo House” would be a perfect
name and the others agreed. So Starbucks today would be called “Cargo House” and
nowadays one of the founders recognized in an interview that this name would have been
a terrible mistake!
So… What made them to change their opinion?
Fortunately, a friend of them that was working in an advertising enterprise heard of the
idea about the name “Cargo House” and said to them that for the name to be more
interesting in the advertising world, it was recommended that the name start with "ST",
because at that moment they were recognized as powerful words!

Slide 7:
So… They listened and started searching for new “ST” words for the brand’s name.
One day, they set up another meeting and somebody, somehow, came up with an old
mining map of the Cascades and Mount Rainier and started looking around for interesting
names… Suddenly, one of them looked at an old mining town called “Starbo” .
This name really caught their attention, because as you remember they all had an
incredible knowledge in literature!
Slide 8:
But why?
As soon as they saw the name “Starbo”, they remembered the famous novel Moby-Dick,
which you all have certainly heard about, because there is character in this story called:
“Starbuck”.
“Starbuck” was a sailor aboard the main boat and a close friend of the captain of the
story...
So… it was an amazing coincidence between the name of the mining town and the
character of the book.

Slide 9:
So…. They liked a lot the name “Starbuck” and decided to keep it… But where is the “S” at
the end of the name that we all know that nowadays exists?
(Put the advertising picture)
Well, it’s not a surprise. In fact, I think it’s pretty obvious what happened…
As you can see, they chose, again due to advertising strategies, to add an "S" at the end of
the word, just because they thought it sounded better…
They imagined that it would be easier to say: “We are going to Starbucks” rather than “We
are going to Starbuck”. So it was all decided!

Slide 10:
And that’s how you get the: STARBUCKS that we all know and love!

Slide 11:
Almost to finish, I would like to read the current brand Slogan that describes the essence
of the name…
So… (Read the text box)
And the slogan its related to the sea, not because of Moby Dick, but because the first
Starbucks coffee ever was opened in Seattle, an important coastal town.
Finally, as you can see, the logo of the first Starbucks coffee was very different, so I would
like to show you, just as a curiosity the evolution of the Starbucks logo…
Slide 12:
Here you have! Interesting, right?
It's almost as if we were zooming the picture to get the next logo…

Slide 13:
Well, that’s it, thanks for you attention!
