2 System Design
Designs the entire system to meet the requirement. This includes system overview, process flow diagram with
piping layout arrangement and control system.
System overview check list:
Corrosion resistant materials of construction are used for all equipment from the supply source to the
membrane including piping, vessels, instruments and wetted parts of pumps
All piping and equipment is compatible with design pressure
All piping and equipment is compatible with design pH range (cleaning)
All piping and equipment is protected against galvanic corrosion
New/clean cartridge filter is installed directly upstream of the high pressure pump

Feed line, including RO feed manifold, is purged and flushed, before pressure vessels are connected
Chemical addition points are properly located
Check/anti-siphon valves are properly installed in chemical addition lines
Provisions exist for proper mixing of chemicals in the feed stream
Dosage chemical tanks are filled with the right chemicals

Provisions exist for preventing the RO system from operating when the dosage pumps are shut down

Provisions exist for preventing the dosage pumps from operating when the RO system is shut down
If chlorine is used, provisions exist to ensure complete chlorine removal prior to the membranes
Interlocks, time delay relays and alarms are properly set
Provisions exist for sampling permeate from individual modules
Provisions exist for sampling raw water, feed, permeate and concentrate streams from each stage and
the total plant permeate stream
Pressure vessels are properly piped both for operation and cleaning mode
Pressure vessels are secured to the rack or frame per manufacturer’s instructions
Pressure vessels comply with pressurised vessel regulation
Flow rates for individual elements may vary but will be no more than +/- 15%.

Feed pressure should be increased gradually over a 30-60 second time frame.
Cross-flow velocity at set operating point should be achieved gradually over 15-20 seconds.

2.1.1 System Location


Conduct underground services check in the area identified for RO Plant.
Design and construct a plinth for the entire system.
The area shall be clean and waste shall be transported to legal dumping site.

2.1.2 Borehole
Dig a trench from 2 boreholes to RO plant
Supply and install a submersible pump with safe monitoring equipment (dry run protection) for 2 boreholes
(B2B & B3B). The pumps shall be enclosed by a stainless steel housing.
Built-in overload motor protection.
Enclosed fan cooled motor which provides maximum safety.

Supply and install a stainless steel safety cable and an anchor for support of the submersible pump.

2.4 Raw Water Tank


Supply and install a 14 kl storage tank. The tank must be properly secured to the plinth
Supply and install level transmitters for water capacity monitoring.
Provide and install an isolation valve on the outlet pipe work of the tank

2.3 Raw Water Pipeline System


Supply and install a pump pipe of 50mm in diameter, polyphenelene Oxide (PPO) material. Connecting
borehole pumps and the raw water storage tank.
The supplied piping shall be complete with all excavation, bedding and backfilling.
Connection at bends shall be made by means of flanged 90 degree long radius bends.
Supply and install flange coupling on pipeline.
Supply and install an electronic meter for each borehole.
Supply and install isolation valves for each borehole.
The pipe system shall be fitted with a non-return valve to prevent back flow

The connection of the two boreholes shall be made by means of a T-piece flanged-pipe connector.

2.5 Pre-Treatment Plant


Supply and install a pre-treatment Centrifugal pump with associated equipment and fittings to make the pump
2.5.1 intstallation fully functional.
Supply pipework from the Raw Water Tank to the Pre-Treatment Plant
Supply and install isolation valve on the downstream of the pump.
The pipe system shall be fitted with a non-return valve to prevent back flow

Supply and install a Multi-Media filter which contains three layers of media consisting of anthracite coal, sand
2.5.2 and garnet, with the supporting layer of gravel.

The Contractor shall provide a Micro-filter with the membrane configuration preferable hollow fiber.
Supply and install an automatic backwash for the Micro-filter to prevent pressure building up in the system.
2.5.3
The Pre-Treatment Plant must be fitted with appropriate Antiscalant and Inhibitors with a rated pressure of
2.5.4 500-600kpa and be an electronic meter type.
The Antiscalant and Inhibitors shall be supplied and installed with a tank for dozer chemical.

2.5.5 Supply and install a Softening by ion exchange on the pre-treatment plant to prevent fouling.
Supply and install a Gunlar Activated Carbon with filters arranged in sequence to ensure that any chemical
2.5.6 that might get past the first filter is trapped by the second.
The system shall include automatic backwash to prevent pressure building up in the system.

2.6 RO Plant
2.6.1 Supply and install a Stainless Steel high pressure pump with associated equipment.
Vibration isolation for HP pump
Supply and install up and downstream isolation valves.
Supply and install up and downstream pressure gauges or transmitters.
The system must be fitted with a Stainless Steel RO membrane housing (5-20bar) for pressure build-up
2.6.2 protection from the membranes.
Supply and install a RO membrane consisting of special and preferable materials (Polymide layer of 0.2 micron
2.6.3 thick, Polysulfone layer and Polyster base.)
Supply and install Stainless Steel RO piping system.
Supply and install a container to accommodate the Pre-treatment plant and RO plant. That has a black
rubberised floor interlock mats and the wall insulation.
Supply and install a clean water piping system from RO Plant high pressure pump piping to the upper stream
2.6.4 tank which is fitted with a non-return valve and pressure transmitter/gauge.

2.7.1 Concentrated Water


Supply and install a flanged PVC piping from the Pre-treatment and RO Plant concentrated water point to the
existing waste water channel.
Supply and install a non-return valve prior to T-piece pipe.
The connection shall be complete with all excavation, bedding and backfilling.
Supply and install a T-piece pipe with blanked Isolation valve.
Supply and install a booster pump if required

2.7.2 Treated or Clean Water Tank


Design and construct a plinth 1/3 of the 14 kl tank height with access platform.
Supply and install an upstream portable water tank on the plinth mentioned above.
Supply and install, in series with an upstream portable water tank, a downstream portable water tank on the
plinth of the entire system.

2.7.3 Existing Water Supply Line


Dig a trench, isolate and cut the section for pipe installation
Weld flanges on existing lines
Supply and install a flanged T-piece pipe that will connect to the main water line with isolation valve

2.7.3 Connection From Storage Tanks to Existing Water Supply Line


Dig a trench from RO plant to existing water distribution network
Conduct NDT on the existing main water supply where welding will be required.
Supply and install a Centrifugal pump from the downstream clean water tank that shall meet the desirable
pressure required by municipality main water line (600kpa-800kpa).
Supply and install a clean water piping system (carbon steel) from downstream Clean Water Tank to the
installed T-piece which is fitted with a non-return valve and isolation valve

Numbering and Labelling


label all supplied equipment. This includes, pumps, Tanks, Pre-Treatment, plant, RO Plant etc
Colour code all piping to indicate direction of flow and fluid type

2.8.1 Control System


Supply and install control panel. This include truncking, DIN rail terminal strip, wiring, labeling and wire
number

2.8.2 Control Valves


Supply and install motorized or electrical actuator operated with 2-way control valves which shall be powered
from the 220V AC supply

2.8.6 Level Transmitter


Supply and Install new level instruments with 4-20mA signal
The interface between instruments and piping / mechanical shall either be ½” NPT (female on the piping /
mechanical side) or flanged.

2.8.6 Pressure Transmitters


Supply and install pedestal
Supply and install Sustech 2-way block and bleed manifold ,fit to transmitter and mount transmitter to
pedestal.
The interface between instruments and piping / mechanical shall either be ½” NPT (female on the piping /
mechanical side) or flanged.
Supply and install ½” tubing from process pipe to transmitter manifold.

pH Transmitter
Supply and install new pH transmitter with local indication with a 4-20mA signal

Conductivity
Supply and install new conductivity analyser across RO module (First stage)
Supply and install new conductivity transmitter downstream of the RO plant

2.8.9 Flow Transmitter


Supply and install new Flow meters with 4-20mA signal

2.8.6 Pressure Gauge


Supply and install pressure gauge
The interface between instruments and piping / mechanical shall either be ½” NPT (female on the piping /
mechanical side).

Electronic Meter
Supply and install electronic meter for borehole

2.8.7 Junction Boxes / CCG Box


Supply and install new junction box with terminal strip to cater for all cabling
Supply and install new CCG Box with terminal strip to cater for all cabling
This include truncking, DIN rail terminal strip, wiring, labeling and wire number

2.8.8 Cable Racks


Supply and installation of the galvanized steel cable racking and all auxiliary fixings and supports

Supply and installation of all the required conduit as well as the required clamps and PVC end-caps

2.8.8 Multi Pair Cabling


Supply, install, gland and terminate 0.5 mm2 cable from new junction box/ CCG Box to controller

For new electrical installations the contractor shall arrange for the issuing of the necessary COC by a

All work operations, should they be required during the removal and installation of any elevated structural
work etc, must be conducted in compliance with the requirements of Construction Regulation 12 and must be
under the supervision of a competent person appointed in writing.
The works Supervisor must inspect all the equipment before use and must certify it as safe to use. The Support
work Supervisor must then inspect the completed installation before loading.
All inspections must be recorded, signed off by the Support work Supervisor and be available on site in the
health and safety file.

The works must be designed by a professional engineer and must be assembled as per the drawings issued.
The appointed contractor must submit a method statement to detail how they will safely install and dismantle
the support work.

The appointed contractor shall ensure that every person working on or visiting the site, as well as the college
staff, students and public in general, is made aware of the dangers likely to arise from the site activities,
including the precautions to be taken to avoid or minimize those dangers.

The appointed contractor has a duty to do all that is reasonably practicable to prevent college staff, students,
and members of the public and site visitors from being adversely affected by their construction activities.
The site must be enclosed by fencing or hoarding and the appropriate health and safety warning notices and
signs must be displayed on the hoarding and at all entrances to the site.
Signage shall be posted up at all entrances to the site as well as in strategic locations on site e.g. access routes,
walkways, entrances to site construction and other potential risk areas/operations.

The appointed contractor must provide appropriate site health and safety signage, including but not limited
to: ‘No Unauthorized Entry’, ‘Visitors Report to Site Office’, ‘Beware of Overhead Work’, ‘Hard Hat Area’, ‘First
Aid’, ‘Fire Extinguishers’, all relevant PPE pictograms etc.
