2 System Design
Designs the entire system to meet the requirement. This includes system overview, process flow diagram with
piping layout arrangement and control system.
System overview check list:
Corrosion resistant materials of construction are used for all equipment from the supply source to the
membrane including piping, vessels, instruments and wetted parts of pumps
All piping and equipment is compatible with design pressure
All piping and equipment is compatible with design pH range (cleaning)
All piping and equipment is protected against galvanic corrosion
New/clean cartridge filter is installed directly upstream of the high pressure pump
Feed line, including RO feed manifold, is purged and flushed, before pressure vessels are connected
Chemical addition points are properly located
Check/anti-siphon valves are properly installed in chemical addition lines
Provisions exist for proper mixing of chemicals in the feed stream
Dosage chemical tanks are filled with the right chemicals
Provisions exist for preventing the RO system from operating when the dosage pumps are shut down
Provisions exist for preventing the dosage pumps from operating when the RO system is shut down
If chlorine is used, provisions exist to ensure complete chlorine removal prior to the membranes
Interlocks, time delay relays and alarms are properly set
Provisions exist for sampling permeate from individual modules
Provisions exist for sampling raw water, feed, permeate and concentrate streams from each stage and
the total plant permeate stream
Pressure vessels are properly piped both for operation and cleaning mode
Pressure vessels are secured to the rack or frame per manufacturer’s instructions
Pressure vessels comply with pressurised vessel regulation
Flow rates for individual elements may vary but will be no more than +/- 15%.
Pressure rates for individual elements may vary but will be no more than +/- 15%.
Feed pressure should be increased gradually over a 30-60 second time frame.
Cross-flow velocity at set operating point should be achieved gradually over 15-20 seconds.
Permeate obtained from first hour of operation should be discarded.
2.1.2 Borehole
Dig a trench from 2 boreholes to RO plant
Supply and install a submersible pump with safe monitoring equipment (dry run protection) for 2 boreholes
(B2B & B3B). The pumps shall be enclosed by a stainless steel housing.
Built-in overload motor protection.
Enclosed fan cooled motor which provides maximum safety.
Supply and install a stainless steel safety cable and an anchor for support of the submersible pump.
The connection of the two boreholes shall be made by means of a T-piece flanged-pipe connector.
Supply and install a Multi-Media filter which contains three layers of media consisting of anthracite coal, sand
2.5.2 and garnet, with the supporting layer of gravel.
The Contractor shall provide a Micro-filter with the membrane configuration preferable hollow fiber.
Supply and install an automatic backwash for the Micro-filter to prevent pressure building up in the system.
2.5.3
The Pre-Treatment Plant must be fitted with appropriate Antiscalant and Inhibitors with a rated pressure of
2.5.4 500-600kpa and be an electronic meter type.
The Antiscalant and Inhibitors shall be supplied and installed with a tank for dozer chemical.
2.5.5 Supply and install a Softening by ion exchange on the pre-treatment plant to prevent fouling.
Supply and install a Gunlar Activated Carbon with filters arranged in sequence to ensure that any chemical
2.5.6 that might get past the first filter is trapped by the second.
The system shall include automatic backwash to prevent pressure building up in the system.
2.6 RO Plant
2.6.1 Supply and install a Stainless Steel high pressure pump with associated equipment.
Vibration isolation for HP pump
Supply and install up and downstream isolation valves.
Supply and install up and downstream pressure gauges or transmitters.
The system must be fitted with a Stainless Steel RO membrane housing (5-20bar) for pressure build-up
2.6.2 protection from the membranes.
Supply and install a RO membrane consisting of special and preferable materials (Polymide layer of 0.2 micron
2.6.3 thick, Polysulfone layer and Polyster base.)
Supply and install Stainless Steel RO piping system.
Supply and install a container to accommodate the Pre-treatment plant and RO plant. That has a black
rubberised floor interlock mats and the wall insulation.
Supply and install a clean water piping system from RO Plant high pressure pump piping to the upper stream
2.6.4 tank which is fitted with a non-return valve and pressure transmitter/gauge.
pH Transmitter
Supply and install new pH transmitter with local indication with a 4-20mA signal
Conductivity
Supply and install new conductivity analyser across RO module (First stage)
Supply and install new conductivity transmitter downstream of the RO plant
Electronic Meter
Supply and install electronic meter for borehole
Supply and installation of all the required conduit as well as the required clamps and PVC end-caps
Supply and Installation of cable terminations, including connection thereof, cable marker, numbering of cores
(Gravoply/ traffolyte sleeves and markers), lugs, and glands as required
Strapping of the cables.
Installation of wire number; source destination
2.8.8 Earthing
Earthing of cabling, racks, instrumentation, junction boxes, CCG Boxes and control panel

The appointed contractor must submit a method statement to detail how they will safely install and dismantle
the support work.
The appointed contractor shall ensure that every person working on or visiting the site, as well as the college
staff, students and public in general, is made aware of the dangers likely to arise from the site activities,
including the precautions to be taken to avoid or minimize those dangers.
The appointed contractor has a duty to do all that is reasonably practicable to prevent college staff, students,
and members of the public and site visitors from being adversely affected by their construction activities.
The site must be enclosed by fencing or hoarding and the appropriate health and safety warning notices and
signs must be displayed on the hoarding and at all entrances to the site.
Signage shall be posted up at all entrances to the site as well as in strategic locations on site e.g. access routes,
walkways, entrances to site construction and other potential risk areas/operations.
