AUGUST MACKE

(January 3, 1887 – September 26, 1914)

August Macke was one of the leading members of the
German Expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue
Rider). He also painted some Abstract Art.
He lived during a particularly innovative time for
German art which saw the development of the main
German Expressionist movements as well as the arrival
of the successive avant-garde movements which were
forming in the rest of Europe.
Like a true artist of his time, Macke knew how to
integrate into his painting the elements of the avant-garde
which most interested him.

ARTWORKS

LADY IN A GREEN JACKET

In this painting, a lady is standing in the foreground
wearing a dark green jacket. She is looking sort of down
and to the side. There are two couples in the background
walking away from her. You get the feeling that maybe
she is lonely or has lost someone recently.
Among the theories of art, this painting is expressionism.
It represents feelings and moods rather than reproducing
objective reality.

FAREWELL
This painting was made when World War I started, and
these visual cues have been taken to represent his feelings
of wartime fear and anxiety. It also shows the sadness of
people because of the war.
