Unit Plan

Cody Ebersole
Unit: Duties and Responsibilities and Civil Rights in the USA.
Dates: November 4th- November 17th
Description: This unit will begin with explaining some of the duties and responsibilities of
Americans in the United States as citizens of this country. These topics will focus less on the
things that people are expected to do such as voting or assisting your community by volunteering
but instead of things that people have to do as citizens. The unit then will transition into the Civil
Rights movement and subtopics within that focus on that subject such as the Jim Crow area and
how we as citizens have the responsibility to respect everyone as a person.

Era and to today. Students will examine how African Americans have earned more freedom over
time and the challenges that they had to face in order to achieve these goals.
Summary of Lesson Critiques
Date Reflection
Wednesday This lesson went well for the most part. I would say that at first, I did not
and Thursday describe the difference a duty and a responsibility as well as I could have. I
improved upon this as the day went on and I taught the lesson multiple
(11/4 11/5) times.
The students seemed to understand the topic and able to differentiate the
difference between the two terms.
Friday and This lesson was good in many ways for the students to learn because they in
Monday some cases have little knowledge on the Civil War and the issue of slavery
itself. I thought that in order to successfully teach the proceeding topics
(11/6 11/9) within the unit that a brief overview of the Civil War was necessary.

By the end of the lesson the students who seemed to struggle with the topic
seemed to have a better understanding of the topic but they likely will need
more instruction on the topic to have a better understanding of the
significance of the Civil War on America’s history.
Tuesday and This lesson went well in that students were able to understand the
Wednesday significance of the Jim Crow Laws and be able to relate and compare to real
world situations.
(11/10 11/11)
I found that they understood this on a greater level than the previous lesson
and as a result seemed to have a good understanding of the topic.
Thursday and This lesson proved to be important in continuing to educate the students on
Friday this topic. It also led to several good discussions on how the Supreme Court
operates in the United States which is likely going to beneficial for the
(11/12 11/13) students when they learn more about this topic when they discuss the
Judicial Branch later in the year.
Monday and Students successfully were able to complete the activities and understand the
Tuesday topic of the lesson. It also served as a good conclusion to the unit and their
understanding of race relations and the Civil Rights movement.
(11/16 11/17)
Overall Overall, I was rather pleased with this unit. I would say that the students did
Reflection well in most cases. There are few things I would have differently such as
explaining a few things differently and perhaps clearer but otherwise I am
satisfied with the outcome of the lesson plans.
