CHEMICAL SPILL PROCEDURES

1. Quickly determine the extent of the spill.


2. Contain the spill by placing a barrier around the spill using rags or sand from chemical spill kit to
prevent from spreading of falling into cracks, drains, if this can be done without risk of injury or
contamination.
3. Reduce vapor concentrations in the spill area. If possible, open doors that lead to outside areas
that are free of people.
4. Prepare for clean-up and wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as gloves,
goggles and aprons to prevent exposure and minimize contamination.
5. Remove sharp objects using tongs and never with hands.
6. Clean up spill by working from the outside spill toward the center to minimize spread of
contamination. Clean up absorbed spill using broom and pan and properly dispose into a
resealable bag for removal with tag out.
7. Clean-up cracks and hard surfaces.
8. Label and seal all contaminated material.
9. Wash hands and all exposed skin with soap and water.
10. Ventilate the spill area.
