Oil Spill Drill

Liquids are everywhere

> they have definite volume but no form
> they are fluid, they flow
> some are harmless, some are corrosive, reactive, flammable or toxic
> they are lubricants and fuels, paints, hardeners, degreassers, neutralizer and acids
> whenever there are liquids, they are possibilities of spills leaks, or releases.

Spills can happen at any time so we must practice and be ready to respond.
Drill or Practice to be prepare for spill.

There are 7 steps of Spill clean up to protect yourself, employees and environment.
1. Assess the risk
2. Protect yourself
3. Stop the source
4. Confine the spill
5. Clean up
6. Decontaminate
7. Report

1. Assess the Risk

>assessing the risk begins the moment the spill occurs
Recognize potential dangers and act immediately
- what substances involved
- how much liquid is spilled
- how dangerous it is, is it risk to life, property or environment
Recognize what you can do and cannot safely do, because the danger may lessen or they may be increase
Before take actions, make sure you are protected

2. Protect Yourself
Once you asses the risk, you are now ready to take action and prepare. If you are going to the hot zone and do clean up, you need to
protect yourself. You need to wear the correct and compatible protective equipment depending on the severity of spill and
chemicals involved.
You need to wear:
- Goggles
- Rubber apron
- Safety boots
- Gloves
- respiratory if needed
- radio for communication between team members

Protective equipment might be tear, rupture, damage during clean up operation. These can cause the spills to be penetrated to you.
If spills penetrated, leave spill area immediately.
You must protect yourself, avoid rupturing the suits and be aware of chemical reaction.
Protect yourself and the others. Keep people away from the spill site.

3. Stopping the Source

Stop the leak to prevent the spill from getting large
There are many ways to stop the leak
> up-righting the container
> rolling the drum so that the leaking side is facing up
> turning the valve or emergency shut off
> plug or patch the leak
Quick setting epoxy could stop the source of spill
> transfer the content of container to the new container

4. Confinement
Confinement means reduce the amount of print or the spill as much as possible.
It also means limiting the spill area. The faster you can stop the source, the less liquid you have to recover. Generally, the sooner you
can confine the spill the less area you have to decontaminate later.

> for smaller spill, you can simply wipe

> for larger spill, diking, daming, diverting or otherwise confining the liquid to keep it from spreading.

The key to successful spill response is having the right equipment on hand and knowing how to use that equipment when spill
occurs.
> Mats (foams)
> absorbent sacks
> pillows
> loose absorbent
> absorbent booms
> non absorbent dikes & drain cover

Other:
> Clean sand
> Sawdust
> Sand bags
> buckets and shovels
> dripping pans
> storage containers
> plastic bag

Spill kit design for spill potentials. Spill supplies should be checked and replenish according to regular schedule.

To confine the spill, start at the farthest point. A dam made of absorbent sacks effectively stop the liquid. Overlap the absorbent
sacks to the outside of the flow to avoid leakage.

Non-absorbent dike cover or Sand bag must be:

Height = 2x the depth of spill
Width = 4x the depth of spill

5. Clean up
> mimimize the spill
> cleaning the spill
> removal/ absorption of spill using the right equipment
> disposal of waste on the propper disposal area marking it as hazardous waste

6. Decontamination
> removal or neutralizing of hazardous material accumulated in people and equipment

Prevention
- no one should enter the hazardous material spill zone until a decontamination area is ready.
- remove / despose of clothing or thoroughly scrub and rinse yourself in soap and water or chemical neutralizing solution.

7. Report
Submit reporting requirements to your locals to avoid penalties if neglected.
