SPILLAGE CONTROL
2
What is a chemical spillage?

 This is the accidental or uncontrolled release of chemicals at workplace and it is important

that everyone on the site knows how to control a spill to minimise the impact.
3
Causes of chemical spillages.

 Inappropriate handling techniques.

 Inappropriate storage containers.
 Damaged storage containers.
 Uncontrolled access to chemical storage.
 Lack of chemical related training.
 Lack of supervision.
4
Spill Control Kit

 A spill control kit is a set of 4 cans which contain sand, neutralising agent, absorbents and
an empty collection bin with identification board and spill control instructions.
5
Types of spillages at workplace.

TYPE QUANTITY EXAMPLE CONTROLS

Small Up to 300ml Spillages in the lab Spill control kit
Minor 300ml-5L While handling Spill control kit

Major More than 5L Leakage from storage Hand over to the
tanks environmental
response team and
evacuate the area
6
Spill control procedure

 We can control chemical spillages by the following 4 simple steps:

7
1.Identify

 Identify the spilled material to stop the cause of spillage.

 Barricade the spillage area to prevent the personnel movement.
 Inform the safety department.
8
2.Contain

 Wear suitable PPE (gloves, googles, gum shoes, face shield, etc.).
 If the spill is in large quantity, take it into empty tank.
 If spillage is major, follow Occupational Safety and Environmental program(OSEP) and
hand over to the environmental response team.

3.Clean

4.Collect

 Collect the spilled material in the empty can of spill control kit.
 Send the collected material, water, used PPE to the effluent treatment plant.
 If spill occurs on soil dig up the entire area of spill and send it to the effluent treatment
plant.
