To ensure a process for handling of Biohazard spill

Scope
This work instruction defines the actions and responsibilities of all departments in handling Biohazard spills.

Instruction Details Responsibility
1. Isolate area and alert personnel in immediate area of spill All Staff
2. Put on gloves, apron, 3M mask due to dissipation of aerosols in air then enter the area. All Staff
3. Use specific decontaminant like Sodium Hypochlorite and let it stand for 20 min. All Staff
4. Put absorbent materials, collect and Transfer all contaminated material into a red bag Housekeeper
5. Wash area with soap / detergent, water and collect with paper towels and discard in
red bag with disposable gloves and send for incineration Housekeeper
6. Put all spilled Biohazard waste into red bag Housekeeper
7. Refer to Infection Control work instructions in the Infection Control Manual
for blood spill. All Staff
8. Remove all Biohazard waste and dispose into red bag All Staff
9. Dispose Biohazard bag into Biohazard bin All Staff
10. Sanitize affected areas Housekeeper
11. Transfer biohazard bag to Biohazard bin in waste collection center Housekeeper
12. Wash hand and the effected person thoroughly, take shower and change clothes. Housekeeper
Handling of Chemical Spill

Scope
This work instruction defines the actions and responsibility of all departments in handling chemical spill.

Definitions
MSDS Material Safety Data Sheets
Major Spill Any spill that exceeds 1 meter in diameter and involves the release of a type or quantity of a
chemical that poses an immediate risk to health. Involves an uncontrolled fire or explosion.
Minor Spill Any Spill with in 1 meter in diameter

1. Isolate area and alert personnel in immediate area of spill, close lab doors and
evacuate the immediate area if necessary All Staff
2. If spill is more than 1 meter in diameter, contact Housekeeping supervisor on
call for cleaning All Staff

For major spill
1. Evacuate the building and if there is a fire activate the nearest fire alarm. All Staff
2. Inform your supervisor with these details, the accident including location, types of hazardous
materials involved, and whether there is personal injury. All Staff
If the accident involves personal injury or chemical contamination, follow these
steps as appropriate and at the same time:
3. Move the victim from the immediate area of fire, explosion, or spill (if this can be done
without further injury to the victim or you). All Staff
4. Locate nearest emergency eyewash or safety shower. Remove any contaminated clothing from
the victim and flush all areas of the body contacted by chemicals with copious amounts of water
for 15 minute . All Staff
5. Administer first aid as appropriate and seek medical attention. All Staff
6. Confine and contain the spill. All Staff
7. Remove all chemical waste and dispose into red bag, label the red bag Hou ekeeper
8. Transfer chemical waste to chemical waste collection center Housekeeper
9. Refill / restock the spill cleanup supplies for future against purchase requisition All Staff
For minor spill
1. Remove all ignition sources and unplug nearby electrical equipment. All Staff
2. Establish exhaust ventilation. Vent vapors to outside of building only (open windows). All Staff
3. Locate spill kit. All Staff
4. Put on gloves, mask, goggles, apron or lab coat All Staff
5. Refer to MSDS/ Information on chemical container for chemical spill All Staff
6. Confine and contain the spill. Check if spill is acidic or basic. Acid and base spills
Should be neutralized prior to cleanup. Cover with appropriate absorbent material.
Sweep solid material into a plastic dust pan and place in a sealed 5 gallon container Housekeeper
7. Remove all chemical waste and dispose into red bag, label the red bag
8. Informed Departmental head / Supervisor/ Housekeeping! EHS All Staff
9. Transfer chemical waste to chemical waste collection center Housekeeper
