The fractionating PMX IMPACTOR INLET


of the Small Filter Device (Kleinfiltergerät)
LVS3/MVS6 can be equipped with jet sets
(8 pieces each) for PM10 - PM4,0 - PM2,5 -
PM1,0. The jets are to be stuck into the jet
plate and are sealed by O-rings. The jet
plate together with the protection roof and
the flow plate can be pulled out of the inlet’s
outer tube (sealing also by O-rings). The
flow plate and the protection roof as well are
made of polished stainless steel.

All jet sets are available for flow rates of


3,5 m³/h - 3,0 m³/h - 2,3 m³/h - 1,0 m³/h.

The impaction plate is exchangeable and


can be prepared (cleaning and greasing) e.
g. in the laboratory. Under the impaction
plate is a deep well for condensation or
penetrated rain.

The inlet’s filter holder is directly attached to


the pre-impactor. The filters are contained in
cassettes, which are inserted in the filter
holder. Two filter cassettes capable to take
in filters with diameters of 47 mm re-
spectively 50 mm (alternatively) belong to
each inlet.

The filter holder has a thread piece made of


brass at its bottom side. The suction pipe

The STANDARD INLET of the Small Filter


Device (Kleinfiltergerät) LVS3/MVS6 is an
open system, which can sample particles up
to an aerodynamic diameter of some 30 µm.
The inlet is to be operated with a controlled
flow rate of 2,7 m³/h up to 3 m³/h.

The flow plate and the protection roof as


well are made of polished stainless steel.

The STANDARD INLET can be also used


for the measurement of organic and
inorganic fibres. At a flow rate of 1,6 m³/h
the face velocity at the filter is ca. 33,5 cm/s
(effective filter diameter ca. 41 mm). This
flow rate meets the requirements for
sampling of fibres according to pertinent
ISO standards.

The filters are contained in cassettes


(POM), which are inserted in the inlet. Two
filter cassettes capable to take in filters with
diameter of 47 mm respectively 50 mm
(alternatively) belong to each inlet.

The inlet has a thread piece (M12x1) made


of brass at its upper side. The suction pipe STANDARD INLET

The PU INLET of the Small Filter Device


(Kleinfiltergerät) LVS3/MVS6 is an open
system, which can sample particles up
to an aerodynamic diameter of some
30 µm.

The inlet is to be operated with a flow


rate from 2,7 m³/h to approximately
3 m³/h.

The inlet consisting of PU cartouche and


filter holder can be delivered in two
versions. At the first version the filter
holder is assembled in front of the PU
cartouche, at the second version
downstream the PU cartouche.

The filters are contained in cassettes


(POM), which are inserted in the filter
holder. Two filter cassettes capable to
take in filters with diameters of 47 mm
respectively 50 mm (alternatively)

For the sampling of fine dust fractions the PU


INLET of the Small Filter Device (Kleinfilter-
gerät) LVS3/MVS6 can be combined with a
PMX pre-impactor.

The pre-impactor can be equipped with jet sets


(8 pieces, each) for PM10 – PM4,0 – PM2,5 –
PM1,0.

The jets are to be stuck into the jet plate and are
sealed by O-rings. The jet plate together with the
protection roof and the flow plate can be pulled
out of the inlet’s outer tube (sealing also by O-
rings). The flow plate and the protection roof as
well are made of polished stainless steel.

All jet sets are available for flow rates of


3,5 m³/h – 3,0 m³/h – 2,3 m³/h – 1,0 m³/h.

The BIO INLET of the Small Filter


Device (Kleinfiltergerät) LVS3/MVS6 is
an open system, which can sample
particles up to an aerodynamic diameter
of some 30 µm.

The inlet is to be operated with a flow


rate of 3 m³/h.

In the guideline VDI 4252 part 2


sampling of moulds using a gelatine

the sequential sampler SEQ47/50 or
KAR8 can be equipped with jet sets (8
pieces, each) for PM10 – PM 4,0 -
PM2,5 - PM1,0. The jets are to be stuck
into the jet plate and are sealed by O-
rings. The jet plate together with the
protection roof and the flow plate can be
pulled out of the inlet’s outer tube
(sealing also by O-rings).

All jet sets are available for flow rates


of 4,0 m³/h - 3,5 m³/h - 3,0 m³/h -
2,3m³/h - 1,0 m³/h.

sequential sampler SEQ47/50 or KAR8
the PMX inlet can be equipped with an
OZONE DENUDER (SCRUBBER), which is
to be adapted downstream the PMX
impactor. The SCRUBBER serves for the
protection against reducing the PAHs by
ozone, which are sampled on the filter.

For the determination of the BaP concen-


tration the combination of PM10 impactor
inlet according to CEN EN12341, SCRUB-
BER and filter is described in the CEN
EN15549 as European standard sampling
system.

The use of the SCRUBBER gives clearly


higher measurements of the sampled PAHs.
However, the SCRUBBER is susceptible to

The SCRUBBER is directly accessible by


opening the draw latches of the PMX INLET with SCRUBBER
SCRUBBER housing. The housing is, when for sampling of Bap (PAHs)
closed, sealed by an O-ring and the according to CEN EN 15549 and
SCRUBBER itself also by two O-rings. Directive 2004/107/EC

The SCRUBBER housing consist of hard The absorbed ozone is to be removed from
coated aluminium. The SCRUBBER can be the SCRUBBER by treating it at a tempe-
continuously operated over a period of up to rature of 150 °C over approximately
1 month. It can be used several times. 8 hours (overnight).

2. Concept
The Low Volume Sampler LVS3 and the Medium Volume Sampler MVS6
serve for determining the concentration of suspended particulate matter
(SPM), indoors as well as outdoors. The particles sampled on the filter can
be gravimetrically evaluated and also analysed with regard to dust
components, e. g., metals, anions or PAHs, and also radioactivity.
The air sample is sucked in through the inlet by a vacuum pump. The air
flow rate is measured by an orifice plate installed between the filter and the
vacuum pump. The sampled air flows from the pump through a separator for
the abrasive carbon dust of the pump’s vanes to the outlet.

3. Model Variations
3.1 General Information
The instruments are designed for outdoor use and can be operated
without rain protection or similar equipments. Should internal
temperatures drop below 5° C, the automatic heating system inside the
device will engage (the yellow LED over the heating symbol will be
lit). When the temperature increases inside the housing to more than
30 °C a fan will be automatically switched on and the device will be
ventilated.

The deviation of the controller (µ-processor controlled) is < 2 % of the


set point under field operating conditions. The sampling time is
monitored by the µ-controller and saved in the system’s memory. The
information stored in the memory can be viewed on the display. In
case of power failure, all data stored in the µ-controller and in the
system memory will be safe for several years thanks to a built-in high-
capacity battery.
Note:
The sampler shuts down after the pre-selected sampling time of,
e. g. 24 hours exactly after elapsed 24 hours, irrespective of
whether a power break down occurred during the sampling time
or not. In case of a power break down the sampling time is
shortened by the duration of the power break down. The sampling
time shown on the display respectively stored on the memory stick
is reduced by the duration of the stopping time. The sampled air
volume is automatically calculated on the basis of the actual
sampling time.

The instruments are protected corresponding to the protection code
IP 44.
In case the filter becomes clogged, the system will shut off
automatically (see clause 10).
If the instruments are exposed to temperatures below 10 °C
without being operated (e.g., during the night or weekends) the
main power switch should be switched on.

3.2 Low Volume Sampler LVS3


This model allows controlled operation at 1,0, 1,6, 2,0 and 2,3 m³/h
resp. Nm³/h. In uncontrolled mode (UMODE), the device is identical
with regard to its functions with the previous model GS 050/3-N,
described under the VDI-guideline 2463, part 7, issue August 1982.
Its sampling system is described under the VDI-guideline 2463, part 8
(standard method for the comparison of non-fractionating methods),
issue August 1982. With a glass fibre or quartz fibre filter inserted, the
flow rate amounts to about 3,2 m³/h in uncontrolled mode.

The system allows controlled operation at 1,0, 1,6, 2,0 and 2,3 m³/h
resp. Nm³/h.

3.3 Medium Volume Sampler MVS6


The system allows controlled operation at 2,3, 2,7, 3,0 and 3,5 m³/h
resp. Nm³/h. The controlled flow rate of 2,7 m³/h meets the
requirements of VDI 2463 parts 7 and 8.

The device can also be operated in uncontrolled mode at a maximum


flow rate of approx. 5 m³/h.

4. Data Output

On the display the following parameters are shown during sampling


(see also clauses 7.1 and 7.2):

Notes

1. During sampling an asterisk (*) behind the displayed flow rate will
indicate that the set point of the flow rate has been exactly reached.
Should the asterisk disappear for a short time, e. g. caused by a change of
the pressure drop across the filter, there is a deviation of only less than 1%
of set point because of the generally slowly and continually increasing
pressure drop across the filter. Within the range of the set point an
electronic window will be opened, within of which also very small
deviations are registered.

2. Beside sampling by pre-selecting of sampling time and starting time (see


clause 7) sampling can be also manually started by pressing the grey key
under the menu point

START 

(see also clause 7.2)

After pressing again the grey key the sampler stops and the result will be
displayed as described above.

Note

Press the grey key always a little bit longer. By short pressing the display
will be refreshed, if it should be extinguished for a short time.

3. The absolute pressure Pb in the orifice is displayed as a measure for the


absolute pressure behind the filter. The pressure drop across the filter is
given by the difference (Pa-Pb).

If memory sticks and docking station are used

The memory stick is to be put into the upper blue contact at the
electronics of the LVS3/MVS6.

The data can be downloaded by a laptop directly at the site or stored on a


memory stick. Please note that the number on the memory stick should be
the same as the serial number of the sampler. This memory stick can be
taken from the site to the laboratory and there downloaded via a special
docking station. The procedure for downloading the data from the
memory stick to a PC via docking station is as follows:

1. Put the memory stick containing the data from the previous run of the
sampler in the contacts on the top plate of the docking station.

2. Plug the attached cable in the contacts at the back plate of the docking
station and connect this cable with the RS 232 interface of the PC.

3. Put the cable’s plug of the attached power supply unit (9 – 12 Volts
DC) in the contacts at the back plate of the docking station and put the
power supply unit in a socket (230 Volts AC).

4. Start the status view software at the PC.

5. Select “synchronisation” in the status view software.

6. Data will be read from the memory stick and downloaded to the PC.
After saving the data, the file can be imported to Excel.

7. Enter the data for filter weight, the ident. no. of the station, the
experiment no. and the particle size (e.g. PM10) also in excel.

The results are shown in an excel table.

Subsequently, an example for the data output is shown. The memory stick
can store results up to 17 sampling periods, that means it does not have to
be necessarily exchanged for another one after each sampling period. the
results of 17 or less sampling periods can be also plotted in a diagram
showing the course of the dust concentrations measured over all sampling
periods. An example of such a diagram is also enclosed in the following.

The docking station can be used for both types of samplers, the Sequential
Sampler SEQ47/50 and the Filter and Cartouche Changer KAR8.
Therefore, the excel table contains the temperature (Tfm – mean value
over sampling time), which is measured behind the currently sampled
filter. This temperature will be measured also behind the filter of the Filter
and Cartouche Changer KAR8.

The minimum pressure in the orifice plate is not contained in the excel
table. However, it will be transmitted with the Bavarian-Hessian protocol.
An example for the Bavarian-Hessian protocol is also attached.

For the direct data output and the Bavarian-Hessian protocol the
lower blue contact at the electronics of the LVS3/MVS6 sampler is to
be used (e. g. by means of the attached cable).

5. Installation of the Inlets
Depending on the type of measurement, either a bent or straight suction tube
should be used. The suction tube must be connected to the right side of the
device using the quick-change connector designed for that purpose.

For disassembling the suction tube the blue release ring of the quick-
change connector must be pushed down (otherwise the quick-change
connector can be damaged!).

When using the Standard inlet, the Bio inlet and the PU inlet (PU
cartouche), it is necessary to use a bent suction tube. Before the inlet can
be installed, the counter nut must be screwed on up to the end of the thread
and firmly tightened. Next, the protecting roof has to be screwed firmly
against the counter nut. After than, the inlet can be screwed on.

With the PMX inlet (PM10, PM4,0, PM2,5, PM1,0) and the PMX inlet
with PU cartouche respectively PU cartouche with scrubber a straight
suction tube is used. The inlets must be screwed on the suction tube and the
tube must be placed into the quick-change connector.

Manual tightening can be rendered sufficient for a gas tight connection


between inlet and suction tube since a sealing ring is placed at the end of the
inner thread.

6. Adapter for Calibration


For sticking the black hose nozzle (plastic) in the quick-change connector
and removing it again it is to proceed as described under clause 5. The
sampler can be connected with a reference flow meter for calibrating the
flow rates by means of this nozzle and a hose with a inside diameter of
9 mm.

The inlets can be also set up externally by using this nozzle and a hose.

6) CAL.FLOW 

The system’s flow rates have already been calibrated by the


manufacturer. If you do not wish to begin a new calibration,
choose another menu feature by using the white cursor
keys.

PREPARATIONS FOR THE CALIBRATION PROCESS

A reference flow or volume meter (orifice flowmeter, rotameter


or dry gas meter) must be connected to the sampling tube, e.g.,
using a hose connection. The intake openings of the reference
flow or volume meter must be free (no flow resistance).

Orifice Flowmeter

The use of the orifice flowmeter (manufactured by Sven


Leckel Ingenieurbüro GmbH) is quite simple. This
flowmeter is to be connected with the intake opening of the
sampling tube respectively of the sampler. The flowmeter
shows directly the sampler’s flow rate with an uncertainty

repeated every two years according to the rules of DAKKs.

The pressure and temperature sensors have already been


calibrated by the manufacturer.

Before re-calibrating the sensors, please take into consideration that


e.g. a deviation of approx. 10 mbar of the sensor for the ambient
pressure Pa from the barometric (ambient) pressure causes a change of
the controlled flow rates by only approx. 1 % related to a barometric
pressure of 1000 mbar. A deviation of approx. 6 K of the sensor for
the ambient temperature Ta from the true ambient temperature causes
a change of the controlled flow rates by only approx. 2 % related to an
ambient temperature of 300 K. Thus, if the sampler`s sensors deviate
by only a few mbar (e.g. 5 mbar) resp. a few degrees (e.g. 2 K) from
the true values, they should not be re-calibrated. Note that pressure
and temperature transducers commonly used for dust samplers are no
meteorological instruments with extremely high precision.

The absolute air pressure Pb in the orifice plate must be equal to the
absolute ambient pressure, when the pump does not run.

The temperature inside the sampler Ti is measured in the electronics


and will be influenced by the heating system inside the electronics (for
protection of the electronics at low temperatures) respectively the
cooling air from the blower (see clause 3.1, page 4).

In case of too large deviations of the sensors for the ambient pressure
Pa, the pressure Pb in the orifice plate, the ambient temperature Ta,
the filter temperature Tf and the temperature inside the housing Ti
from the corresponding readings of reference instruments for the
measurement of the barometric pressure and the temperatures proceed

8. Maintenance
8.1 Pump
The pump operates without oil. It should be made sure, that no
water, oil or other liquids are drawn into the pump. Do not position
the device next to machines that may emit oil-containing air or
other substances that might damage the pump. The pump should
bee used only in connection with the dust filter.

8.1.1 Vanes
The width of the carbon vanes should be checked after
approx. 3000 hours of operation.

2. Principle
The Filter and Cartouche Changer KAR8 is designed as a compact
complementary device to the LVS3/MVS6 sampler. The changer can
be used under all environmental conditions like the LVS3/MVS6
sampler. The functions of the changer are controlled by the
LVS3/MVS6 sampler.

The changer can be equipped with 8 PU cartouches with pre-filter as


well as only with 8 filter holders. Beside continuous sampling
(sequential sampling) there is the possibility of operation in intervals.
The breaks between each active sampling and the sampling times can
be pre-selected between 1 hour and 168 hours, each. Pre-selection of
sampling times and duration of breaks are described under clause I.7
menu feature 3) “Flow rate”.

The operation of the changer is very simple. After each


equipping with new cartouches/filter holders during a short
interruption (1,5 – 2 min) of the sampling process e. g. of the last
or the next to the last cartouche/filter holder the device continues
automatically its operation without new start.

Without new equipping the sampler stops automatically after


finishing the eighth sampling process or by releasing a stop at the
LVS3/MVS6 sampler. In the following the changer’s operation is
described in all details.

3. Sampling System

The changer’s sampling system is identical to that one of the


SEQ47/50 sampler, that means the inlets designed for the use at the
SEQ47/50 sampler must be used for changer KAR8, too.

The sampling tube (stainless steel (V2A), inside / outer diameter


27 mm / 30 mm) is inside an outer tube for sheath air. By means of
this sheath air the air sample in the sampling tube is protected from
evaporation of semi-volatile particles like ammonium nitrate
contained in the air sample due to heating up the sampling tube by
strong solar radiation.

For disassembling the sampling tube the wheel with the round
openings, the so-called spacer, which fixes the position of the
sampling tube inside the outer tube, must be removed. This spacer is
at the top of the outer tube. Then, the front plate of the rectangular
tube between the two magazines should be screwed off for easier
handling. The sampling tube can be now taken out of its stainless
steel adapter, which is screwed on the ground plate.

This procedure should be performed sometimes in order to clean


the rectangular tube and the fan blower for the sheath air e. g.
by means of a vacuum cleaner.

When fitting the sampling tube, it is to pay attention that the


sampling tube is stuck into the adapter up to the stop. The lower
end of the tube should be slightly greased (Vaseline) for better
sealing in the adapter.

For disassembling the outer tube the upper ring of the flange
mounted on the sampler is to be removed. After that, the outer tube
can be easily taken out of the rectangular flange on the rectangular
tube.

When fitting in the outer tube, its lower end should be also
slightly greased (Vaseline).

PMX Inlet
After opening the snap latches of the PMX inlet the upper part of the
inlet can be taken off. By that, the impaction plate is accessible. The
impaction plate must be cleaned and greased (silicon vacuum grease)
in intervals of approx. 14 days. By revolving the impaction plate a
little, the grease between the spots, where the coarse dust was
separated before, can be used for the next period.

For exchanging the jet tubes, the upper jet plate can be pulled out of
the outer tube. The jet tubes are stuck into the jet plate and sealed by
O-rings.

For improved lubrication, the O-rings of the jet plate and the jet
tubes as well as that one at the impaction plate should be greased
(Vaseline) occasionally.

PMX Inlet with Scrubber
For the sampling of PAHs the PMX inlet can be equipped with an
OZONE DENUDER (SCRUBBER), which is to be adapted
downstream the PMX impactor.

The SCRUBBER is directly accessible by opening the draw latches


of the SCRUBBER housing. The housing is, when closed, sealed by
an O-ring and the SCRUBBER itself also by two O-rings.

The SCRUBBER can be continuously operated over a period of up


to 1 month. It can be used several times.

The absorbed ozone is to be removed from the SCRUBBER by


treating it at a temperature of 150 °C over approximately 8 hours
(overnight).

TSP Inlet
The TSP inlet is an open system. The inlet should not be taken by the
insect screen for transportation or fitting on the sampling tube.

Before putting on the inlet on the sampling tube, the upper end of the
sampling tube should be slightly greased (Vaseline) in order to
achieve improved lubrication.

4. Equipping the Changer
For equipping the changer with PU cartouches or only with filter
holders the connection of the LVS3/MVS6 sampler with the changer
is not necessary. This procedure is not controlled by the LVS3 /
MVS6 sampler. For putting the cartouches/filter holders into the
changer’s rotary disk the POM-lid (in front of the electronics) at the
removal position must be removed and after putting in the
cartouches/filter holders fit in again. The slit between the cartouches
respectively the filter holders and upper plate is so small that no air
circulation can occur.

The rotary disk turns clockwise.

4.1 PU Cartouches
The cartouches must be put into the openings of the rotary disk
with the separate filter holders (pre-filters) facing upwards.

Important
Please pay attention that the upper cap (POM) and the end
cap (POM) are stuck on the glass tube of the cartouche up
to the stop. If not, the cartouche can jam during operation.

The end cap has a bore hole with a diameter of 10 mm, the
upper cap is shaped for the insertion of the separate filter
holders.

The positions of the rotary disk can be changed as follows:

1) Turn on the changer by means of the red main power


switch.

2) Press the grey key (beside the main power switch).

Above the grey key a red LED lights.

3) By means of the white cursor key the position of the rotary


disk can be changed.

4) After putting in all 8 cartouches the grey key must be


pressed again.

The red LED is out now.

If the grey key has not been pressed again (red LED lights),
the changer cannot be put into operation by means of the
LVS3/MVS6 sampler.

The 8 green LED’s beside the white cursor key indicate, which
of the cartouches is momentary at the sampling position.

4.2 Filter Holders


For using the changer as “simplex filter changer” without PU
cartouches firstly the extension top must be fitted on the lower
short tube (diameter 56 mm) at the sampling position up to the
stop. Then, the 8 supports with the separate filter holders must
be inserted into the openings of the rotary disk (see clause 4.1).

The filter holders are identical with those of the PU


cartouches.

5. Connecting the LVS3/MVS6 Sampler
The LVS3/MVS6 sampler is to be connected with the Filter and
Cartouche Changer by means of the added grey interface cable. The
cable is to be put into the lower blue contact at the front plate of the
LVS3/MVS6 sampler. The free end is to be led through the lower
rectangular opening at the bottom of the LVS3/MVS6 sampler and
also through the corresponding opening at the changer’s bottom. The
plug at the cable’s free end is to be put into the corresponding
contact at the changer’s electronics.

The pneumatic connection between LVS3/MVS6 and changer is to


be made by means of the attached hose, the both ends of which are
equipped with black mortise nozzles. These nozzles are to be stuck in
the quick-change connectors at the LVS3/MVS6 sampler and the
changer.

For disassembling the hose the blue release rings of the quick-change
connectors must be pressed in (otherwise the quick-change
connectors can be damaged).

The LVS3/MVS6 sampler should be set up at the left side (front


view) of the changer due to the hose connection between
LVS3/MVS6 sampler and changer.

6. Operation
For recording and storing the data the memory stick is to be inserted
into the contact above the red main switch at the electronics of the
changer.
For direct downloading the data and for appliance of the Bavarian-
Hessian protocol the lower contact at the changer`s electronics is to
be used.

6.1 Putting into Operation
For putting into operation the changer it is to be started from
clause I.7.1 menu feature 9) “Option KAR8”.

As described under clause I.7.1 menu feature 3), the wanted flow
rate can be pre-selected. Since it is recommended (EN
20041/10/EC), to analyse PAHs contained in the PM10 fraction,
the PM10 inlet for the European standard flow rate of 2,3 m³
(related to ambient conditions) is to be used. The PM10 inlet can
be equipped with a scrubber, if wanted.

However, as PAHs are mainly present in the fine mode < 2,5 µm
particle diameter, also the PM2,5 inlet (flow rate also 2,3 m³/h)
can be used for sampling this species. This inlet can be also
equipped with a scrubber, if wanted.

For PM-sampling without subsequent analysis of PAHs (operation


of the changer only with filter holders without cartouches) PMX
inlets for different flow rates are available.

If the changer shall not be manually operated (start and stop by


hand), starting time and date, sampling duration and, if wanted,
duration of breaks for operation in the interval mode can be pre-
selected, as described under clause I.7.1 menu feature 4).

After the pre-selection of the operating parameters for automatic
sampling the menu feature 2) START BY CLOCK is to be chosen
at the LVS3/MVS6 sampler and the grey key is to be pressed.
Then, the changer will start at the preselected time and date.

6.2 Sampling
During sampling the following parameters are shown on the
display:

Line 1: Alternatively flow rate in m³/h or standard-m³/h


(Nm³/h) and filter no. and sampling time in h and min

Line 2: Current volume in standard-m³ (Nm³) and operating-m³


(m³) (not shown, if the flow rate is pre-selected in terms
of Nm³/h)

After 1 minute:

Line 1: Current ambient pressure (Pa) in mbar and current


ambient temperature (Ta) in °C

Line 2: Current temperature above the filter holders (Tm) in °C


and current temperature below the cartouche resp. the
filter holder at the sampling position (Tf) in °C

After that, the display changes back.

After finishing the sampling process the display shows:

6.3 Exchanging the Cartouches / Filter Holders


during Operation
For exchanging the sampled cartouches / filter holders during
operation the grey key at the electronics of the changer is to be
pressed. The red LED above the grey key must light. After the
exchange of the sampled cartouches / filter holders (by means of
the white cursor key) the grey key is to be pressed again. The
red LED is out now.

Example 1: Exchanging of 7 cartouches / filter holders

Cartouches/filter holders no. 1 – 7 are already sampled,


cartouche / filter holder no. 8 is at the sampling position and
currently sampled.

For exchanging of the 7 sampled cartouches / filter holders pro-


ceed as follows:

Press the grey key at the changer. The red LED above the grey
key lights.

The sampling process of cartouche / filter holder no. 8 will be


interrupted (pump stops).

At the removal position the POM-lid is to be removed.

Cartouche / filter holder no. 6 can be exchanged.

Press now the white cursor key (at the changer). Cartouche /
filter holder no. 7 will be moved to the removal position and can
be exchanged.

Press the white cursor key.

Cartouche / filter holder no. 8 will be moved to the removal


position and will not be exchanged, as the sampling time for this
cartouche / filter holder has been only interrupted.

Press the white cursor key.

Cartouche / filter holder no. 1 will be moved to the removal


position and can be exchanged.

Continue this procedure up to the exchange of cartouche / filter


holder no. 5. Thus, cartouches / filter holders were exchanged in
the following order: nos. 6, 7, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

After that, press again the grey key. The red LED is out now.
The rotary disk moves now cartouche / filter holder no. 8 back to
the sampling position and the sampling process will be continued.

Fit in again the POM-lid.

The exchanging procedure as described above takes


approximately 1,5 to 2 min.

After sampling cartouche / filter holder no. 8 the cartouches / filter


holders nos. 1 – 7, which have been exchanged before, will be
sampled without further pressing the keys at the changer and at
the LVS3 / MVS6 sampler. Thus, the not exchanged cartouche /
filter holder no. 8 and the exchanged cartouches / filter holders
nos. 1 – 7 were sampled in total.

After sampling cartouche / filter holder no. 7 the changer stops.

However, if the sampling process with cartouche / filter holder


no. 7 was interrupted ( grey key at the changer) and the already
sampled cartouches / filter holders were exchanged in the
following order:
nos. 5, 6, 8, 1, 2, 3, 4, the rotary disk moves cartouche / filter
holder no. 7 back to the sampling position and the sampling
process will be continued after presing the grey key at the
changer.

Also in this case cartouche / filter holder no. 7 was not exchanged,
as the sampling process with this cartouche / filter holder was only
interrupted.

After sampling cartouche / filter holder no. 6 the changer stops, if
the sampling process with cartouche/filter holder no. 6 was not
interrupted (as described above) and the already sampled
cartouches / filter holders in the order nos. 4, 5, 7, 8, 1, 2, 3 were
not exchanged.

In case no exchange of cartouches / filter holders will be


performed and the changer stops after sampling cartouche / filter
holder no. 6, in total the not exchanged cartouche / filter holder
no. 7 and the exchanged cartouches / filter holders no. 8 and nos.
1 – 6 were sampled.

In case all cartouches/filter holders will be exchanged after the


stop of the changer – in the example described above after
finishing the sampling process with cartouche / filter holder no. 6
– the display shows:

At a new start by pressing the grey key at the LVS3/MVS6


sampler or by START BY CLOCK the rotary disk moves
cartouche / filter holder no. 1 to the sampling position and the
process with cartouche/filter holder no. 1 starts.

Example 2:
Exchange of less than 7 cartouches/filter holders

If e.g. the sampled cartouches / filter holders nos. 1 – 6 shall be


exchanged already during the sampling process with cartouche /
filter holder no. 7, this exchange can be performed after
interrupting the sampling process with cartouche / filter holder no.
7 by means of the grey key and the white cursor key, both at the
changer. Cartouche / filter holder no. 7 and the still not sampled
cartouche / filter holder no. 8 are not to be exchanged.

After pressing the grey key at the changer again the sampling
process with cartouche / filter holder no. 7 will be continued. After
finishing the sampling process with cartouche / filter holder no. 7
the cartouches/filter holders no. 8 and nos. 1 – 6 will be sampled.

In case only 3 further cartouches / filter holders shall be sampled
e. g. after the finished sampling processes with cartouches / filter
holders nos. 1 – 7 and after the sampling process with cartouche /
filter holder no. 8, which is still going on, only cartouches / filter
holders nos. 1, 2, 3 can be exchanged after interruption of the
sampling process with cartouche/filter holder no. 8 by means of
the grey key at the changer.

After pressing the grey key at the changer again the sampling
process with cartouche/filter holder no. 8 will be continued.
However, all following cartouches/filter holders up to the
changer`s stop after finishing the sampling process with
cartouche/filter holder no. 7 will be sampled.

In case only still the cartouches/filter holders nos. 1, 2, 3 shall be


sampled, the changer is to be stopped at the proper time by
pressing the grey key at the LVS3/MVS6 sampler. The grey
key is to be hold until the sampling process stops.

Note

The changer performes always 8 sampling processes (without


or with break intervals) up to its stop. When started again, 8
cartouches / filter holders will be sampled one behind the
other or, at automatic continued operation (always subsequent
equipping with new cartouches / filter holders), the inter-
rupted sampling process with the currently sampled
cartouche / filter holder will be finished and after that the
sampling process with the remaining 7 cartouches / filter
holders will be performed.

6.4 Power Break Down
The changer shuts down after the pre-selected sampling time of,
e. g. 24 hours exactly after elapsed 24 hours, irrespective of
whether a power break down occurred during the sampling time or
not. In case of a power break down the sampling time is shortened
by the duration of the power break down. The sampling time
stored on the memory stick is reduced by the duration of the
stopping time. The sampled air volume is automatically calculated
on the basis of the actual sampling time.

If the power break down exceeds the sampling time of a


cartouche / filter holder, the following cartouche / filter holder will
be moved to the sampling position after finishing the power break
down and the sampling times of the former and the new
cartouches / filter holders will be shortened accordingly.

III. General Remarks

1. Filter

Diameter of the filter is 50 resp. 47 mm

For the determination of SPM and dust compounds glass fibre, quartz
fibre, Teflon (PTFE) or other membrane filters can be used.

According to CEN EN 14902 quartz fibre filters or cellulose filters


with a pore size of 3 µm (e.g. cellulose nitrate filters) are suited for the
analysis of heavy metals. For Teflon filters, the Federal Register Part
II (1997) of US EPA prescribes a pore size of 2 µm.

When using Teflon or other membrane filters, electrostatic charges of


the filter material could influence the weighing results. If nuclepore
filters are used, a membrane filter with a large pore width (e.g. 8 µm)
must be placed between the filter holder’s sieve and the nuclepore
filter in order to protect the nuclepore filter, if no support screen is
inserted in the filter holder.

Because of the higher flow resistance of Teflon, membrane, and


nuclepore filters in comparison to fibre filters, the use of such filter
media causes a reduction in the sampling system’s flow rate, if used in
uncontrolled operating mode (UMODE). In case of controlled flow
rates the samplers can shut down due to a too high pressure drop
across such membrane filters (e.g. due to a wet filter at damp weather
conditions or very high fine dust concentrations – see also “Filter
Overload”). The LVS3 sampler, which is equipped with 3m³-pump
shuts down e.g. at a flow rate of 2,3 m³/h and a pressure drop across
the filter of some more than 30kPa = 225 mm Hg (300 mbar). If
higher pressure drops for controlled flow rates shall be reached, the
use of the MVS6 sampler is to be recommended.

Sampled filters should be maintained at a temperature between


20 °C and 23 °C during the transport from the measuring site to
the weighing room (according to CEN EN 14907) in order to avoid
losses of volatile particulate material from the samples.

Filter Overload

Should the system be unable to generate the pre-selected flow rate due
to clogging of the filter, it will automatically be shut off, as described
above. This will be indicated by an exclamation mark, instead of an
asterisk, flashing on the display behind the pre-selected flow rate.

The cause of the malfunction must then be removed, e. g., by inserting


a new filter.

2. Safety Advice
The electronics of the LVS3/MVS6 sampler as well as that one of the
KAR8 device may only be opened by a specialised expert. Before
opening the electronics pull out the plug. Repair of the electronics
without the aid or advice of the manufacturer excludes warranty.

The capacitors of the electronics loose their charges only 5 min. after
pulling out the plug!

For safety reasons, the devices may be only operated in connection


with grounded safety contacts.

These devices are classified as class A (CE). The devices can cause
radio interference in residential buildings. In this case ask for
assistance. It is not allowed to install this equipment close to life
saving system.

The seller cannot foresee all possible modes of operation in which the
samplers may be used. The user assumes all liability associated with
the use of these samplers. The seller further disclaims any
responsibility for consequential damages.

3. Guarantee

If putting an appliance to improper use, the guarantee will expire.
