Can animals talk? Of course it often looks as if they can. Parrots and other birds
can be taught to make sounds just like human speech. However, this is not really talking,
because the word “talking” suggests that something – feeling, thoughts or information –
is being expressed, but a parrot can only repeat the sounds it has heard without

On the other hand, many animals and birds make noises that are like a sort of
language. For example, they are used as signals to warn each other of danger or to show
that food has been found. Such signals are a sort of language but only at a very low level.
They are rather like the noises that human beings make when they laugh or feel
10 frightened; they are not controlled and they do not express thoughts or give information
as human beings usually do when they talk to each other.
The fact is that even the most intelligent animals are able to exchange little or no
information when they “talk”. They may be able to warn their friends of danger but they
cannot say much about what and where the danger is. It is true that there are a few
15 animals that are able to use different sorts of language in special ways. For instance, bees
can tell other bees where food can be found by doing a dance, which can show the
direction, distance and even the amount of the food supply, according to the pattern and
speed of the movements in the dance.
This is a wonderful example of animal communication. But it can give only one

seems that, in spite of all those wonderful stories about talking animals, man is really the
only animal with a true language ability. In fact, the more men study human languages,
the more surprised they become that so many sorts of feelings, thoughts and information
can be expressed by all human beings, using so few sounds and grammatical rules. It is
man’s use of language that more than anything else raises him above the other animals
