This year is not good for the below average or middle class earners. The pandemic caused by
the COVID-19 heavily affected the citizens of third world countries and their economy. It caused
a lot of problems for middle class earners that lose their job or for people who have weak
immune system. The burden of the pandemic is being felt mostly in the hospitals or healthcare
industry. The public health workers here in the Philippines which are not very well compensated
are the most affected.

Another problem that was being faced by our citizens was the mental health problem brought by
the pandemic. It brings paranoia to people especially if the cases in their hometown rises.
However I think the most predictable effect on our mental health is that the pandemic can truly
make everyone depressed. First is the affected middle and low class families that work
everyday just to make ends meet. The economy is heavily affected and many were laid off
because of closing of establishments. Other people affected are those working or studying from
home. The stress of the workload was still there however unable to see their companions make
things worse.

What we learned in pharmacology about psychological drugs is helpful to depressed people

these days. I think most of the depressed people nowadays belong to the mild depressed
individuals or dysthymia group. Their depression is not permanent and will also stop if the
pandemic ceases and everything goes back to normal. I think the best drugs to help in those
who has mild depression are the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. They are the first line
drugs for non melancholic depression. However the right medications prescribed by a doctor
with the help of our friends and family hopefully find aid in their situations.
