Assignment/Workshop: Bible Studies & Disaster

1. What type of disaster is described in this Bible passage?

The type of disaster that was described in this Bible passage was flood or inundation as

stated in verse 20 which says “The waters rose and covered the mountains to a depth of more

than fifteen cubits”

2. In this scripture passage, what is written about the cause of this disaster?

The cause of this disaster is human wickedness which if we’re going to put it in today’s

context refers to human irresponsibility’s which resulted to abuse of nature and ignoring their

responsibility as carers/steward of Earth.

3. What actions were taken by God’s people to prepare for or respond to the disaster that

happened? What were the result?

Noah demonstrated it by living a holy and obedient life before God. He was the only man

living that time who found favour from God. He was instructed to build an Ark and to bring with

him his family and pairs of animals of all kinds. Obedience to God’s instruction is the best

response everyone could make. In today’s context we need to be mindful of our responsibility as

stewards of God’s creature. As stewards we are expected to care for the Mother Earth.

The result was Noah and his family’s safety including of those pairs of animal of all

kinds. We too we’ll be safe if we take good care of God’s creation. In fact we are dependent on

God’s creation because they are the ones that provides us of all our basic needs, like food, shelter
and clothing. As the saying goes, “Take away man and nature will flourish but take away nature

and man will die”.

4. How did God use the situation to fulfil His bigger, long term plans for the people on earth?

(E.g. to prepare for Jesus or to extend His kingdom?)

He used the situation to cleanse the world of greedy people and to replace it with those

who are God-fearing and obedient ones like Noah and his family. In our times we need to join to

organizations and participate to any activity that advocates for the promotion and protection of

environment. Let us help in ushering God’s reign here on Earth by making the world a beautiful

and conducive place for all of us to live in. This can be realized if we will educate ourselves and

our fellowmen of our roles in protecting and propagating our environment.
