WOODSHED CHAPTER SUMMARY

The Chapter first started with the scenario immediately after the Discovery. The office of Jan
was left in disarray with the amount of work to be done in the Woburn Case. We are introduced
with a number of characters which were related with Jan and Conway.

First, we were introduced to Patti D’Addieco, an assistant hired by their office to get the
complete medical records of all the Woburn family members. Second, there is Shirley Conibear,
a doctor who helped Jan found some links with the symptoms of TCE exposure on the Woburn
victims. Her reports found that there is a pattern of solvent poisoning in the cases. Third, Jan
came upon a certain Saul Cohen, a cardiologist he hired to determine irregular heartbeats
among the families. He was then asked to testify for the plaintiffs. Jan also had conferred with
Robert Feldman, a neurobiologist who previously helped Jan with the Carney case.

The result of Feldman’s test upon the Woburn families gave Jan’s case some information that
there is a nerve damage to which it could signal that the families are exposed to TCE. Jan also
contacted Beverly Paigen who showed that TCE vaporizes upon contact with the air. This could
imply that while the families have not been exposed directly via drinking water, they might be
exposed thru inhalation. Another toxicologist inferred that TCE can also be absorbed by the
human skin.

The chapter then shifted to the money problems of Jan’s firm. We are introduced to Gordon,
their financial advisor and his partner, Phillips. For almost all of Jan’s cases, Gordon had secured
financing and administration of the works involving the cases. They went to the Private Banking
Group of Boston whose vice-president is Pete Briggs. Briggs or Uncle Pete had always been
financing Jan’s cases to which the Woburn case is no different matter. Jan and co. had already
secure a 200,000 USD unsecured credit or loan from the bank. Uncle Pete then asked the
“boys” to secure the loan thru Unifirst’s payments. The boys left with an increase in their credit
line of half a million dollars.

There was another deposition wherein Jan had sworn on record. He had been called to Judge
Skinner’s chambers to which he was reprimanded by the judge for this conduct. After this
conference, Facher offered Jan to settle the case. Facher had proverbially “offered” Jan to settle
for 20 Million USD using a 20 dollar bill.
