BOSTON CHAPTER SUMMARY

A telephone call woke Jan Schlichtmann from his dream of a young woman deciding which path
to take in the forest. A man from the Bay Bank South Shore told Schlichtmann that he was
behind on his loan payment of his Porsche 928. Schlichtmann told the banker to speak with
James Gordon, the man who handles Schlichtmann’s financial amatters.

As he lay in bed, the phone rang again only to be spoken to by the Suffolk County sheriff who
intends to repossess his car. Schlichtmann called Gordon but there was no answer. As he
stepped down from his building, the sheriff delivered the documents for repossession.
Schlichtmann offered to get the car from a garage three blocks away.

The car in question was only in his possession for two years but he had only driven it for a few
thousand miles. He drove the car to Pinckney Street and handed the keys to the sheriff. The
sheriff then proceeded to remove the license plate and collected the garbage from within the
car. The garbage included a few law books and transcripts of a civil case. As the sheriff handed
him the garbage bag, he asked Schlichtmann if he was involved in the said civil case, Anne
Anderson, et al. v. W.R. Grace & Co., et al. The sheriff then left Schlichtmann on Pinckney
Street with his Porsche.

Schlichtmann went to the federal courthouse two days later. As his car was repossessed and he
has no money, he walked to Downtown Boston. He saw a homeless man begging in the street
and thought to himself that he was likewise close to being homeless himself. He failed to pay a
single maintenance payment to his condominium association for last six months. His firm was
losing money and if he lost this recent case, he would be sunk into debt.

However, he thought that money is not the main issue in this current case. If he lost this case,
his confidence, ambition, and talent would fade away. He saw himself being a homeless person
begging in the park. The jurors then arrived to the court.
