Impsa: Restructuring to innovate existing resources

Current resources: What Impsa has to work with


1. Tangible:
a. Physical Assets: R&D and production facilities that contain a lot of high-tech equipment
b. Financial Assets: High Total current assets of 3,757,747 measured in thousands of argentine pesos.
Allows Impsa to pay for ongoing expenses.
c. Technological Resources: Patent a direct-drive wind turbine, UNIPOWER, that eliminated the need
for a gearbox.
2. Intangible:
a. Innovation: Incremental innovations to their hydropower generators and windmill turbines. They did
not patent their Kaplan Turbine to avoid competitors from understanding the improvements.
b. Knowledge: 7000 skilled employees throughout the company who innovating and capitalizing on new
ideas.
c. Brand Reputation: Impsa has a valuable brand name and reputation as it is a holding company with
many successful businesses within such as IMPSA Hydro, IMPSA Wind, IMPSA Energy and many
others.
Capabilities: How Impsa uses its resources
Impsa’s capabilities are their use of intangible assets to exploit their tangible assets. For example, their
employees can use their skills, knowledge and create thinking in combination with the company’s
resources, equipment and financial capacity to improve o technologies and potential produce a new
product to further their in the industry.

Core competences: VRIS framework was used in order to identify the core competencies
Impsa main core competencies is their strong research and development ability. For example, the
company has many employees dedicated to continuous R&D, improvements and innovation of existing
technologies related to every part of the value chain of all its products.
Valuable: Innovation and employee creativity is an intangible asset
Rare and Costly to Imitate: Not many firms can afford to innovate, produce and sell their products.
Non Substitutable: Other resources cannot copy an intangible asset that Impsa has.
Sustain and development of core competences:
In order to maintain their competitive attribute, they need to continue to invest in the core competencies,
that sets them apart, Research and Development. They can continue to set themselves apart from other big
players in the industry through organizational learning/employee learning, strategic flexibility, effective
technology management.
