of Design Philosophy of design education and the story of 4 years.

DJAD commenced in 2004 to a felt need in the country. The potential

for offering design services within India and abroad expanded as India
matured as an economic power. But there was a shortage of trained
designers within the country. DJAD’s inception was to cater to this need
in a small yet significant way.

D J Academy of Design belongs to the illustrious GKD Charity Trust,

set up in 1983 by the industrialist par excellence, (Late) Cavalier Dr. G
K Devarajulu. His pioneering efforts saw the emergence of Coimbatore
on the global industrial map and the LMW Group as a major force to
reckon with. The Group now comprises a staggering 20 companies
with LMW being the flagship brand. The idea to start a Design Institute
under the GKD Charity Trust was born under the aegis of Mr. Sanjay
Jayavarthanavelu and PAR Kumar who visited NID, Ahmedabad.
After having studied the facilities and observed the culture of design
learning, the team held talks with the NID Executive Director for future
collaboration.

WHAT? What exactly is a mixer grinder?

A kitchen appliance widely popular in India that is used to mix

food into powder or paste. Used frequently as a kitchen aid.
They are used to do things like mixing, blending and grinding
of different food ingredients. The mixer grinder comes with at
least two different jars - one used for wet sauces and another
for making dry powders. The jars are made of stainless steel
with the wet jar being larger than the dry jar.

In a recent trent, more attachments are available with the

machine like vegetable mixer jar, meat mixer jar, and food
processors.

WHY? What is the objective of the project?

To improve the quality of life of users through thoughtful and

essential design considerations.

FUTURE
This thesis project aims at providing an overall highlight to
emerging trends, empathizing consumerism and consumers,
communication and generating a balance in insights and the
design process to provide what I feel is a feasible solution for
the future.

This link of problem-solving and certain - uncertainty provides

a breathing space that would be informative of the future and
most importantly our role in it.

?
To enable artificial intelligence and the internet of things to take control of
Costs our kitchen we need to look at the initial capital required to set about that
process.
In the current economy remodeling a kitchen take lakhs of our money,
remodeling it with appliances fitted with AI and IOT would be a significant
cost for a regular Indian household.

Although recent models like the Samsungs smart fridge - family hub
has dropped to a semi-affordable price it still wouldn’t make up the
ecosystem as most people would prioritize upgrades with longevity, for
example, cabinetry and counters.
Waste Management

AI/IOS devices also have the power and ability to

minimize waste generate d in the kitchen in terms of
both the food waste that human error brings about or
also effort put into carrying out activities in the kitchen by
a person. These devices can predict, efficacy, organize
and strategize everything from ordering groceries that
you have run out of for you to planning out meals to
reduce food waste due to expired food. This could come
in handy as almost 40 % off all food produced in India is
wasted.

Storage

Smart devices like refrigerator and storage solutions like

smart containers like slabs are designed to help users
with how to store food as the scan it, index it and further
processes. The physical barrier would still be similar as
the food would occupy the same space they always
have.

Layout

The layout of the kitchen would largely remain the same

as the physical space required to by their IOT counterpart
might be the same with some exception and overall the
kitchen space shall start looking more niche and modern.
Minimal clutter and maximum efficiency. We can start to
see more quality from products and their home space.

Causes Of
Transportation: Poor adherence to sound control norms,
noisy vehicles, modified vehicle exhaust especially bikes
and heavy vehicles plying in residential areas also add to
the noise.

Poor urban planning: Congested houses, large families

sharing small space, fighting over parking space, frequent
fights over basic amenities leads to noise pollution which
disrupts the environment of society.

Construction activities: Under construction activities like

mining, construction of bridges, dams, buildings, stations,
roads, flyovers take place in almost every part of the world.

Noise
Household chores: Due to the infiltration of gadgets for
almost everything in our daily lives, homes produce noise
from gadgets such as TV, mobile, mixer- grinder, pressure
cooker, vacuum cleaners, washing machine -dryer, cooler,
air conditioners, etc. While this form of pollution may seem
harmless, it, in fact, has far-reaching consequences.

Social events: Marriages, parties, pubs, and discos or places

of worship, is where people normally flout rules set by the
local administration and create a nuisance in the area. People
listening to loud music and hawkers shouting their wares add
to this nuisance.

Industrialization: In our city industrial units are interspersed

Effect on Wildlife
Pets react more aggressively in households where there is constant noise.

They become disoriented more easily and face many behavioral problems.

This, in turn, disturbs owners both mentally and emotionally.

Effects of noise pollution on pets

and other animals (during Diwali)

Effects of Noise Pollution

Hearing Problems

Health Issues

Excessive noise pollution in working areas can influence psychological ill health.

At the cellular level, the body’s cells do not repair as they should and die off when
exposed to loud noise on a regular basis.

Sleeping disorders

Poor sleep due to noise disturbance causes irritation and uncomfortable situations.

Cardiovascular issues
Critical health problems
due to noise pollution Due to constant noise disturbance conversations may be misunderstood or poorly
understood.

ASHOK SURESH / DJAD / 2019

Causes Of Noise Pollution

Making barriers to insulate noise producers

Reducing sound levels

At home, turning off electronics when not in use,

Occasionally moving house if the ambient sound levels are too high and
cannot be controlled is the only option for some people whose health is
being seriously adversely affected by noise pollution.

Better urban planning can help in creating ‘No-Noise’ zones, where

honking and industrial noise are not tolerated

How can one avoid

noise pollution
The solutions can range from keeping yourself away
from loud noises by choosing where you live, to , consult
a doctor in case of big health problems you might
encounter.

sell good quality items with a couple of exceptions. All products which are tried and tested.

The store itself takes up a very small space and is jam-packed with stuff. Everything is
organized using sleeves and hooks.
The store does not get a lot of customers as compared to others mostly because they are a
very niche store in a mall that has a hypermarket and other home appliance stores. But the
people who did come in usually browsed and bought small modern kitchen utensils. Most
were young married couples and middle-aged women. Medium sized Appliance Store

Visiting the expo there was a lot of people on that particular day and it had just started. The various brand that had
come to showcase their products here had a specific space in which they could customize it, however. A particular
brand of mixer grinders which stuck out from the rest was Preethi with their zodiac mixer grinder as they were doing a
live demo. Had the opportunity of looking at the designs fro brands which otherwise would’ve been missed like McCoy
and Usha and v-guard, brands which mostly rebranded generic Chinese or Indian manufactured mixer grinders. Was
able to observe the different marketing techniques used by brands and what sets brands apart.

Other innovations were also displayed like the manual juicer, food processor and the portable USB charged juicer.
A lot of these products were fresh in the market also they were being demoed which let me observe and use some
products first hand.

numerous times to be repaired when something goes wrong.
I visited some of these repair shops to cover the problem that

pumps, fans, mixer grinders, motor rewinding etc. His knowledge of the different products with motors
available these days are limited. So he keeps the services he offers also limited to the product he knows
thoroughly and has been working with for years.

Usual problems he takes in mixer grinder includes armature problems (the core of the motor) and also
replacing the bush between the coupler and the jar.

Average repair cost for mixer grinders range from Rs.300 - Rs.800 depending on the type of problem,
the intensity of repair and time and effort taken to source parts and carry out said repairs.

The volume of customers that come in to service their mixer grinder is approximately 1 - 2 people every 2
weeks.

People tend not to trust the quality of repairs done by such shops resulting in lesser customers for more

You can also see some mixer grinders that came in for repair but couldn’t be and were given off for a
sum of money as spare parts.

electric kettles, backup lights etc. He knows how to fix modern appliances like breast pumps and also
convert 110v operated devices to 220 v.Naturally, this skill set attracts a lot more clientele.

Usual problems attended to in their shop regarding mixer grinders is motor rewinding, also repairing the
motor getting burnt or getting stuck due to various reasons including overload.

They charge a fixed rate of Rs.100 just to diagnose the problem and figure out what’s broken. After
looking at how to fix it and whats required the provide an estimate, if approved by the client then move
Sanju Jose/ Established reapair shop / Kochin on with the repair process. Average costs range from Rs.700 - Rs.2000 (for things like replacing the
motor and else).

They get about 1 - 2 customers every day with problems concerning their mixer grinder as they’re
located in very close proximity of a lot of apartment. They also help kids that come in with their science
projects building customer relations with parents and others.

They have a lot of deman and not enough man power to supply required services which leads to a long
wait time.

environments : The mixer grinder comes into contact with -

• Bowls
• Tiles/Granite
• Other appliance
• Bottles
• Food waste
• Glass
• Containers (salt, turmeric, etc)
• Cloth

• Interiors of the storage unit
• Dust
• Cleaning liquid

Other things to consider in the environment is the aesthetic

effect the product has on it. And usually as seen it kept

the other appliances placed in the same spaces. It all needs
to be considered.

Where is A.B.S used ?

ABS’s light weight and ability to be injection molded and extruded make
it useful in manufacturing products such as drain-waste-vent (DWV) pipe
systems, musical instruments (recorders, plastic clarinets, and piano
movements), golf club heads (because of its good shock absorbance),
automotive trim components, automotive bumper bars, medical devices
for blood access, enclosures for electrical and electronic assemblies,
protective headgear, whitewater canoes, buffer edging for furniture and
joinery panels, luggage and protective carrying cases, small kitchen
appliances, and toys, including Lego and Kre-O bricks. Household and
consumer goods are the major applications of ABS. Keyboard keycaps
are commonly made out of ABS.

ABS plastic ground down to an average diameter of less than 1

micrometer is used as the colorant in some tattoo inks. Tattoo inks that
use ABS are extremely vivid.

When extruded into a filament, ABS plastic is a common material used in

3D printers.

Properties Its natural benefits of affordability and machinability do not hinder the ABS
material’s desired properties:

• Impact Resistance
• Structural Strength and Stiffness
• Chemical Resistance
• Excellent High and Low-
Temperature Performance
• Great Electrical Insulation Properties
• Easy to Paint and Glue

A.B.S
ABS has a strong resistance to corrosive between those of Polypropylene (“PP”) and
chemicals and/or physical impacts. It is Polycarbonate (“PC”). ABS plastic is not
very easy to machine and has a low melting typically used in high heat situations due to its
temperature making it particularly simple to use low melting point. All of these characteristics
in injection molding manufacturing processes lead to ABS being used in a large number of
or 3D printing on an FDM machine. ABS is also applications across a wide range of industries.

ASHOK SURESH / DJAD / 2019

Disadvantages of A.B.S :
ABS plastic is advantageous in a wide variety of industries;
however, certain physical limitations restrict the materials
used in certain products and applications. These
shortcomings include:

ABS is stable to decomposition under normal use and polymer

processing conditions with exposure to carcinogens well below • Weatherability (damaged by sunlight)
workplace exposure limits. However, at higher temperatures (400 °C)
ABS can decompose into its constituents: butadiene (carcinogenic to • Solvent Resistance
humans), acrylonitrile (possibly carcinogenic to humans), and styrene.
• Hazardous When Burned
Ultrafine particles (UFPs) may be produced at lower temperatures during
the 3D printing process. Concerns have been raised regarding airborne • Limited Uses in Association with Food Industry
UFP concentrations generated while printing with ABS, as UFPs have
been linked with adverse health effects. • Higher Price Than Polystyrene or Polyethylene

What is Injection Molding?
Manufacturing
process study : Injection molding is a manufacturing process for producing
parts by injecting molten Parts to be injection molded must
be very carefully designed to facilitate the molding process;
the material used for the part, the desired shape and features
of the part, the material of the mold, and the properties of the
molding machine must all be taken into account. The versatility
of injection molding is facilitated by this breadth of design
considerations and possibilities. material into a mold.

regards to the type of projects I would like to undertake in
