Sound Manipulation
Here are a few procedures you can use with your child or student to train reading speed and accuracy.
By drilling this procedure, readers can learn to readily correlate sounds with letters or groups of letters, so
critical for reading fluency.

Activity 3 example: for the word ‘drat’ you simply say, ‘drat, last’… the student should drop the /t/
sound and simply reply by saying ‘dra’. You can also ask the student to drop the rst or second sound, so
vary which consonant sound you ask him or her to drop. Remember—don’t ask them to drop vowel
sounds.
