BI-WEEKLY REFLECTION #1
What did I do? Describe work/tasks I met with my supervisor and I worked on my cover letter and
resume. We both worked on the learning agreement together. My
first task was to take the online course for the Google Suite
Certification. Here, I learned about more advanced details about
many Google apps such as Drive, Sheets, Slides, Docs and Gmail. I
also got started on helping the Foley Center transfer their
information and content from their old website to a new website on
Google Sites that they will use. I reorganized the information to
make it easier to read and I changed the visual style of the website.

What did I learn that I didn’t know? I learned how much you can do with the Google apps and all kinds of
tools that I never used before. I learned about easier ways to
manage the content on my Google accounts and ways to improve
the look of my content through these courses. Finally, I learned even
more about Foley Center’s mission and values and what the
organization’s goals are in more detail. There is a lot of emphasis on
fighting racial injustice and social injustice. As for building the
Google website, I learned that Google Sites is another way to build
websites and it is even easier than Weebly. This is important
because Google Sites is a great alternative for Weebly or Wix
whenever you want a simpler website built quickly.

Why is that important? It is important to know more about these Google applications
because these are skills that I should learn as a graphic designer and
a communicator. Having more knowledge about how to use the
Google applications is important because many brochures, fliers and
presentations come from Google. The course informs me about
easier ways to build charts and to get the total amount for the most

2
specific items in Google Sheets for example. More importantly, I will
need to learn how to utilize these apps so I can work collaboratively
with my colleagues during the projects in this internship. There
could be several group projects coming up and learning how to work
collaboratively on these projects is necessary. As for the orientation,
it is important to know what the organization’s mission is because I
want to work for a company or organization that has values and a
mission that I believe in. Learning how to rebuild the Foley Center
website on Google Sites is important because the website for the
Foley Center has had problems recently and it needed to be
transferred to a much more stable site.

Feedback from supervisor. Be specific! My supervisor said that I have been pleasant to work with. He told
me that my communication was good because I always tell him
when I am going to be here and what I am going to do for the day.
He has also said that I am an independent worker and that I am
responsible. However, he said that he cannot evaluate the quality of
my work yet because we are not producing new content now.

My level of comfort on the job (on a scale of 1-5). Explain 4. It is a nice job and I like all the tasks that I will be tackling. I really
enjoy transferring the information from the Foley Center website to
their new website on Google Sites. It is pretty relaxing in a way. So
far, there has not been anything that has stressed me out. My only
concern is the pace of the job which I am still trying to figure out. By
this, I mean the speed of the job and how fast I should get my tasks
done. I am still trying to figure out how long I need to work on some
projects and how much time I need to spend outside of the
internship.

What was the most difficult task/challenge? Learning how to use the Google Sheets’ more advanced techniques.
Google Sheets is the most complicated Google app that I worked

3
with so far. There are a lot of calculations and filters that need to be
applied to the projects on the application. I had to go back and try
the lesson again after finishing it the first time because I was so lost
on how to complete the task. Now that I have started working on
transferring the website to their new Google Site, the most difficult
task was getting the information in the first place. The Foley Center
website has been down for weeks and I had to resort to using the
Wayback Machine to get some of the information that I needed.
Even then, the site is still shaky, and I got some error codes along
the way. Just retrieving the information from the old website was a
challenge.

My progress (Describe the improvement) I started out only knowing how to use a couple very simple Google
apps, but now I know of several Google apps and I know even more
about the ones that I already use. I can separate my mail in Gmail, I
am more proficient at using Google Sheets and Slides now, I learned
that I can uses these apps offline and I learned how to do
collaborative work with others on the Google apps. For the Foley
Center website going to Google Sites, I picked how to work with
Google Sites quickly. It helped because it feels like an easier version
of Weebly as it was easier to fix mistakes and to move text, photos
and videos in the place I wanted to put them. As I got more of the
content on the Foley Center Google Site, I got more creative with
the design elements. Despite the limited options, I found some
styles for the website that I thought would fit it very well and I
picked a style that not only fit the organization, but Spring Hill
College. I have been getting a bit riskier and creative as I learn on
how to work with these Google applications more and more.

Other Comments I have been really enjoying this experience at the Foley Center right
now and it has given me a drive to follow some of their mission

4
values and fight against social injustice.

BI-WEEKLY REFLECTION #2
What did I do? Describe work/tasks I continued to build the website on Google Sites. I made some
finishing touches on the website with the footer and the header. I
also discussed The Foley Center Branding with my advisor and
Elisabeth Dreaden, an SHC graduate who worked at the Foley
Center before me. We discussed the logos that were used, the
branding as a whole and what steps should be taken so we can
apply the brand. I was given access to all the logos, brochures and
products that were in the Foley Center Branding folder.

What did I learn that I didn’t know? I learned a lot about the Foley Center’s brand during my talk with
Dr. Erik and Elisabeth. I learned that the brand has the students as
the top priority for the audience. They are the ones that will
contribute to the organization the most and they will get the most
out of service learning. I learned how most of the organization’s
logos and brochures are designed and that is with Illustrator and
InDesign. I learned all the requirements for the rebranding such as
the fonts that the Foley Center uses, their color palette and the
tone that the brand is going for. Learning about their brand and
what their next steps taught me about how an organization sets up
their brand and how they communicate with their values. I learned

5
a lot about planning a rebrand from setting a demographic to
setting a tone based on the values and quotes that are important to
the organization.

Why is that important? It is important for me to know about the branding of this
organization because I can help with the branding process more
and come up with ideas that fit with The Foley Center’s ideas. It
gives me more of a perspective and direction on where to with the
organization’s branding. It is important to have a brand because
without it, the organization lacks an identity as students and
professors will not understand what the organization does. A brand
can show the audience what types of organizations the Foley
Center works with and what As a designer and communicator, I
need to understand what the theme and goal of the brand is so I
can build a design that represents the organization in a visually
appealing way. It also important for me to look at their past graphic
design and branding so I can find ways to improve upon it.

Feedback from supervisor. Be specific! My advisor was pleased with my work on the website in Google
Sites. He said that the aesthetic and organization was better than
the Kudzu website. He praised the color choices and the way I
organized the content. However, he told me that some of the
information on the website was dated, so he asked me how we can
turn a polished site with dated information into an updated site
with current content. He praised my work ethic and my progress on
the website. He appreciates me communicating to him about what
my plans are and how I want to approach projects.

My level of comfort on the job (on a scale of 1-5). Explain It is at a 3 right now. I am still enjoying the job, but now that I am
getting introduced to their brand, I am feeling a little more
confused on how I should approach the rebranding. I am starting to

6
worry about coming up with the right ideas for the direction we will
take because I have no experience working with an entire brand.
Hopefully, I will gain some confidence in the next few weeks on
where to go with the branding of the Foley Center.

What was the most difficult task/challenge? The most difficult task these two weeks was just to think about
where to start with the rebranding of the Foley Center. I am still
trying to figure out what I am going to design for the organization
and how I can communicate the message through my contributions
to the organization. I have looked at all of the logos for the Foley
Center, all of the brochures and all of the brand designs and I am
trying to figure out what can I do to improve them or what can I do
to make whatever I design follow the Foley Center’s criteria and
needs while being visually appealing. Right now, just planning
where to go with the Foley Center brand is hard because I am not
sure where to start and what ideas I can bring to the table.

My progress (Describe the improvement) I have gotten much better at using the Google applications after the
G-Suite certification courses. I have been getting presentations and
documents to look better because of the lessons I learned from
those courses. For example, I am a lot better at creating tables in
Google Sheets and using the calculations than I was before I took
the courses. The website that I worked on in Google Sites has also
come a long way. I became much bolder in my choices for
organizing the text and photos and I found a way to use the footer.
The more I learn about the Foley Center, the more ideas I am
getting with the branding and I feel like I am starting to take
leadership. This is the first time I have felt like a leader.

Other comments I missed some hours because the retreat was cancelled on Labor
(Link to my work for the Internship) Day and I was scheduled to take some pictures and get some video

7
footage there. I also missed some hours because of Hurricane Sally.
I will definitely make up these hours in the next two weeks. The
retreat is on Sunday, September 27, 2020 and I will be there for the
internship. I will also make up these days by doing hours on a
Thursday or going a few hours over on a workday.

Here is the link to the website that I worked on during my time in

this internship:

This is a sample of the work I have done at the Foley Center so far.
This is their new website on Google Sites. The content from their
old Kudzu site has been transferred here. For now, I only have
these pages published because my advisor said that some of the
content is outdated.

BI-WEEKLY REFLECTION #3
What did I do? Describe I have been assigned to create a sign design that could replace the current design that the Foley
work/tasks Center is currently using. So far, I am in the sketch phase. Dr. Erik has put me in charge of where
the design should go, and he has given me a couple of details on what he wants the final product
to look like. My job is to make the sign design aesthetically simple, but visually appealing. I have
certain colors that I need to apply to the design which are gold and purple. On Sunday,
September 27th, Drew and I went to the Arrupe Scholars Retreat to take pictures and video of all
the events that day. There were a lot of conversations between the participants and several
activities that they did. These activities involved discussing volunteer service experience, what
wicked problems are and how they should be stopped, the game where you say your name and
name an animal that starts with the person’s first letter and an obstacle course where a group
navigates a person who is blindfolded. I participated in these conversations while getting photos
and footage. I focused more on getting video than pictures because I carried my tripod with me.
I started photos after I started running out of space for my video. We ended the retreat by
watching the film Selma. All of us talked about the themes of the film and the issues it tackled.
Some of the topics we discussed included voters’ rights, racism and discrimination after the film
ended. The footage and pictures are for a production that will be made for promoting the
Arrupe Scholars Retreat. The retreat took place outside of Viragh Hall and Skip’s Place.

What did I learn that I didn’t There were three things that I learned. First, doing some research for ideas on a signage design, I
know? learned that sign designs are not supposed to be visually complicated. They can be, but the
focus is the text and how the design conveys the message of an organization and their values. It
needs to have a simplistic value to it because it will be easier to understand the message of the
organization. I thought that I had to be much more complex when it came to these designs, but
the design just needs to communicate the message from the organization well. The second thing

9
is that I do not need to worry about adding so many details to a sketch or a design. The
simplicity of the design will be more effective than a bunch of imagery thrown together because
it is more about communicating the message than making it look pretty. The final thing that I
learned was from the retreat. I learned about wicked problems and why they are so dangerous
and damaging. They are problems that include violence, racism, poverty, natural disasters and
mass shootings. This was something that I learned while taking pictures and video. I learned that
to prevent these problems from getting worse, it starts with change from people. Any change
that we can make is a difference that will help our community overcome these problems. I
learned more about what wicked problems are in depth and I also learned about possible
solutions to them.

Why is that important? It is important to know what your client is looking for in a sign design because it will help
eliminate making the sketching process more complicated. Once I started getting simpler with
my designs, my sketches looked much more visually appealing. They also started to fit the ideal
design much better. Learning about the need for simplicity in sign designs is important because
simplicity will help get the message across. Learning about the details in my sketches is
important too because it helped me improve my sketches when I found out that I needed to
avoid having too much detail. Simpler sketches also help make the design idea become clearer.
As for the wicked problems, those are important because we need to be aware of them. We
cannot ignore them or be ignorant of them. Participating and listening to the conversations
about these wicked problems gave me more insight on what are some major issues with not just
our community, but in the world. I really want to find solutions for them some day.

Feedback from supervisor. Be I showed Dr. Erik my sketches and it took some time to get back with me, but he told me that I
specific! needed to be simpler with my design ideas. He stressed that less is more. The design is not
meant to be visually busy and that is the problem with the current sign design. He also told me
that using the concepts from the old design hurt because I based some of my sketches on
cramming in so many concepts. I used many elements and concepts for a sign design such as
icon designs, using the hands from the last design, using designs with connections and he did
like some of my ideas and he even said that they could be used in future projects. His main
feedback for me was to focus on getting a simple sign design using the logo, the title of the

10
organization and the tagline: “Forming Leaders in Service.” I have yet to get feedback for my
video and photography work on the Arrupe Scholars Retreat.

My level of comfort on the job I would say my level of comfort is at a 3 again. Dr. Erik now has to work at home due to COVID,
(on a scale of 1-5). Explain so now I have transitioned to working in my dorm. All I am doing is making calls, transferring
files of my work and sketching for the best sign design. When I find a sketch that Dr. Erik and I
are satisfied with, I will be working in the graphic design lab. As far as comfort goes, I like being
able to work in my own dorm, but I do get a little nervous because there are times I do not know
when I will be able to talk with my supervisor in person again. Sometimes, I would meet with
him I am starting to work more independently, and I feel the pressure. However, I am getting
more comfortable working alone each day.

What was the most difficult The most difficult task these last two weeks was getting good video and photos from the retreat.
task/challenge? I needed to get mainly photos of the students close enough so you can see their interactions and
catch their expressions. Dr. Erik wanted me to avoid wide shots. Not only do I need to get the
right kind of pictures with the students interacting and engaging in the activities, but I need to
make sure that all of the technical qualities of the video and photos are perfect. This includes
white balance which controls the coloring of the image, shutter speed of the picture, the ISO and
the aperture. Getting technical parts correct is tricky, especially when I must move from location
to location. One mistake could ruin the image or video and make it unusable. Coming up for the
right ideas for sketching is difficult, but getting good photos and especially good video is much
more difficult because of technical aspects involved and the fact that this was the only chance I
had to get video and photos for the first retreat. After the retreat ended, I could not get
anymore photos or video footage, so I had to get it right then and there.

My progress (Describe the I am starting get a better idea on what the client wants for the sign design. Once I got more of a
improvement) direction, I started using less colors and less elements that I did not need. The sign design just
needs to get the message across and that is what I am working towards now. I am also doing a
better job at communicating with my supervisor who is at home taking care of his son that
tested positive for COVID-19. I am always telling him what I will do for the day and if I need to
take time off for schoolwork. I have generally gotten much more comfortable with sketching out

11
my work. Not only that, but I have also learned to relax a bit more while working. For my work, I
have improved my sketches after meeting with my supervisor and did some research on signage.
Now, I should be able to get some designs on the computer very soon.

Other comments The Google Suite portion of this internship has been postponed due to issues of scheduling for a
test. Me and Dr. Erik kept getting an error code and we never got an explanation for it. I had all
of the information for the credit card right, but the site would not let us schedule for the date. I
have already contacted them and I will see what we can do about taking the test, but I will need
to hold off on that for now so I can focus on the sign design. I know you wanted to hear more
about that, but it is postponed for now. I will take the test and pass it before the internship
ends. I will continue to study and practice for the exam. I have been practicing for the last few
weeks. I have been trying to get much better at it and Google Sheets is the app I need to work
on the most.

The Arrupe Scholar’s Retreat was the first time that I got to use my video and photography skills,
but I only have footage and photos. The video for the program will hopefully be created before
the end of the semester, but I do not know if I, Drew, or someone else will work on it. That was a
fun experience, and I am glad that we were able to participate in some of the conversations and
activities.

BI-WEEKLY REFLECTION #4
What did I do? Describe work/tasks I continued to sketch for the bulletin board sign design and the
pull-up design. They will have similar designs, but they will have
different layouts. I talked with Elisabeth Dreaden again to see
what direction I should go for the sign design. We agreed to use
the logo she created for the Foley Center for my sign design.
When I showed my second round of sketches, Dr. Erik and I went
over them and talked about some elements we could add to the
design from my sketches. I worked on creating the background
for the design and a word cloud which is also called a wordle or a
text cloud. A word cloud is an image or drawing that is filled up
with words. I used wordcloud.com to create it. Initially, I made
the word cloud the shape of a heart, but I swapped it to a hand. I

13
worked on the main design which consisted of a purple
background and two wavey shapes with the color of gold.

What did I learn that I didn’t know? I did not know what word clouds were until Dr. Erik told me about
them, so I learned about word clouds. I learned how to make
them on the website wordcloud.com and how to make them
match the project’s visual style. They make for interesting visuals
to have on a design. I also learned that they were both easier
harder to create than I expected them to be. The word cloud
itself is not hard to set up. I typed the words in that Dr. Erik gave
me and the cloud was created. The problem was that I needed
more words because the shape looked empty. I decided to add
plenty of words that fit the values of the Foley Center and the
title itself to make the word cloud fit the shape. Word clouds are
useful tools to create design projects and I want to use them
more in the future, especially as a communicator.

Why is that important? Learning about word clouds is important on both a graphic design
level and a communications level. On a graphic design level, it is a
way to make words look interesting and unique. I can create
shapes with words that I did not even think of. There is even a
shape I can make out of Pac-Man! I now have some ideas on what
to do with making word clouds out of characters I like or objects I
found interesting. Learning about word clouds opened me up of
thinking about objects in a different light. On a communication
level, a good word cloud can say a lot about the organization’s
values and mission. The words could be activities the organization
does, or they could be the values that it wants to promote. Word
clouds make for an interesting tool that can send a message and
make the design look good.

14
Feedback from supervisor. Be specific! Dr. Erik told me that I have been doing a really good job so far. He
told me that I am working hard and making great progress on the
sign design project. He said I communicate with him well and that
I am considerate about my work. He told that the biggest thing I
need to improve on is my confidence. I still am a little flustered at
times and I am still unsure about the work I am producing. One
day, I started questioning myself if I was doing a good job or if I
was being productive enough. I have gotten better from there,
but I definitely need to build some more confidence so that will
be one of my goals for the next few weeks.
My level of comfort on the job (on a scale of 1-5). Explain It is a 4. I feel much better about the internship than I did the last
few weeks. I was really worried about my progress on the project
and whether I was going the right pace, but I feel that I am on the
right track now. I feel much more comfortable with my work on
the project and I feel much better about my communication with
Dr. Erik. The only thing is that I am still trying to build some
independence for myself and I do that by adding elements on the
design with input.

What was the most difficult task/challenge? Making the word cloud on the website was harder than I thought
it would be. It was time consuming to say the least. I had to
manually type every single word and I had to adjust the size of
the cloud. Sometimes, key words that needed to be in were not
there, so I had to zoom out, but then the shape got disoriented
and unrecognizable. I needed the shape to look like a hand or a
heart. I had to come up with many different words because the
website would take out some duplicates. The worst part was that
I lost my progress one day and I had to start from the beginning! I
figured out how to save it and go back when I am at a stopping
point, but I had some frustrations with creating the word cloud.

15
My progress (Describe the improvement) I have finally moved past the sketch phase for the design. Now, I
am working on the final design for the bulletin board piece. I have
gotten a better idea on how I want the design to look, I am much
more relaxed during the internship which helps because it can get
pretty stressful, and I learned about new tools of graphic design
that I have never heard of. I am also starting to realize that design
is great for a communicator like myself because with my designs,
I want the audience to know what the organization is about and
what they do. Finally, I am starting to gain a little confidence after
worrying so much the past few weeks. It is giving me a better
work ethic and a better attitude. I cannot wait to finish the design
and see how it turns out!

Other comments Working on this internship has shown me that I did the right thing
about picking communication arts as my major, but I also am
pleased with having graphic design as my minor. Graphic design is
important for communications projects because graphic design
helps communicate a message or even about the values of an
organization. When people look at a more visually interesting
promotion piece, they are more likely to look at it longer to see
what the organization is about.

This project has taken a while, but it is a big design and I hope
that it turns out well and that it communicates the message of
what the Foley Center is about. I learned that patience is key
because I have to implement my ideas and my client’s ideas on
how the design should look.

BI-WEEKLY REFLECTION #5
What did I do? Describe work/tasks I put my graphic design elements together for the bulletin board
and pull-up designs. I have worked on three different types
wordles: a heart, a hand and an abstract shape. I put the
elements together as the design was envisioned. I created the
background and word cloud and I used Elisabeth’s logo for the
Foley Center. I used Illustrator to create the background as well
as the flowy shapes. I used InDesign to put the elements in place
including the text. On Wednesday, Dr. Erik gave me an idea of a
promotional video. The topic for the video is creative and
innovative opportunities during the pandemic and optimism
during these difficult times. I created the scope of work for this
video which lays out the production schedule, the description of
the project, the deliverables, the adoption plan and the goal of
the project. I have two people from DVP who will assist me for

17
this project, Sanaja Andre and Sharon Nielson.

What did I learn that I didn’t know? To get started on a big project, I must write something called a
scope of work. While writing it, I learned. When I have something
like this to plan out, I cannot just jump into contacting and
filming, I have to decide what camera I use, who is helping me,
what my backup plans are, what the purpose of the topic is and
come up with the content for the footage. This is obvious, but I
did not take in how much goes into the planning for a project that
I thought was going to be much simpler. Even the way I interview
my clients is something that I need to put into consideration!
Before anything happens, I need to plan out my project any
filming or action is taken. I learned what a scope of work is and
why it is important before starting production on a project.

Why is that important? For the scope of work, it is important to write it because you
need to plan out each step of the project from the equipment to
the production to the success criteria. If I just jumped in to start
filming with any camera or without a direction, the work would
go nowhere. A scope of work also helps with planning the
timeline of the steps and completion of the work. It is great for
envisioning how the project will go. Without it, I probably would
struggle conceptualizing the filming and editing of the project. I
want to use this for my seminar if possible.
Feedback from supervisor. Be specific! Dr. Erik has told me that I continue to do excellent work. He told
me that I ask good questions and that I communicate well. He
likes my enthusiasm and my enjoyment that I get out of work and
says that it makes me very pleasant to work with. One thing that
he told me is that I see my tasks through to the end, no matter
how hard they hard.

18
My level of comfort on the job (on a scale of 1-5). Explain 3. I still enjoy this job and I am getting more out of it now. I am
getting website development, graphic design and DVP tasks here.
I am even getting some journalism experience because I will be
writing an article on one of the organizations the Foley Center is
working with. However, the end of the semester is coming, and a
lot of my projects are piling up. I have to plan and shoot for this
video project, but I still need to edit my graphic design project a
few more times. Now I have an article to write. It is starting to get
more intense.

What was the most difficult task/challenge? Only because it is the first time that I have ever written one, the
most difficult task these past few weeks was writing the scope of
work for the promotional video. It was hard to come with my plan
to get footage and what to edit. I was given the topic of the
video, but that is it. I plan out the filming schedule, the deadline,
the interview questions, what equipment I use and who I work
with. It is difficult to plan out every single step of the process, but
it does give me an opportunity to take a bigger leadership role by
planning out how the project will be completed.
My progress (Describe the improvement) With each few weeks, I feel like I am becoming more and more
independent with my work and now I get to plan out how this
promotional piece is produced and how I want the video to be
directed. I do not want to just produce good work here, but I also
want to become a leader and I feel like I am getting closer and
closer to that goal. However, I am also becoming a much better
team player. I am working with others so much better than ever
before. I communicate with my team very well and the progress
of the project has gone smoothly so far. My entire time during
this internship has helped me become a much better
communicator and designer. It has helped me build the
independence that I lacked in earlier years. I still need a little

19
more improvement, but I am finally starting to take a bigger role
in leadership with my work.

Other comments I know that my tasks are starting to pile up and that they are a bit
different from what I was hired for, but now I feel like I am
starting to get more experience in not just graphic design, but in
communications. I oversee the production of a promotional video
and I was even asked to write an article for one of the
organizations that the Foley Center works with. This internship
has given me a lot of challenges, but it has also tested a variety of
my skills. There are only two more weeks and two days left in the
internship and I hope I can finish strong!

BI-WEEKLY REFLECTION #6
What did I do? Describe work/tasks My major task these last three weeks was filming for the video
and then editing the footage together. For this project, Sanaja,
Sharon and I completed the production of the project. I was the
director, Sanaja and I worked with the camera and Sharon held
the boom mic. We did the filming from Nov. 7 to Nov. 18 and
Drew helped us with the interview with Dr. Erik. For the footage,
we shot most of the volunteers working with their partners. We
interviewed seven people, including Dr. Erik. For the B-Roll
footage, three of the interviewees did their service such as
teaching or tutoring, and we filmed them as they were teaching.
We got close-ups of their expressions, close-ups of the people
they were teaching through Zoom, and medium shots of the
volunteer and their computer side to side. We also got some B-
Roll from the LAC and St. Joseph’s Chapel. After we got our
footage, we all started working on our own individual cuts. I am
doing mine for this internship and my DVP class. I am editing the
interviews together to make a documentary piece on how the
Foley Center has gotten creative with how the members
continue to volunteer. I will finish the cut by either tomorrow or
Monday.

For my graphic design project, I changed the abstract word cloud

for the Cupola design. I will use a word cloud that is shaped as
the cupola on top of the LAC.

21
What did I learn that I didn’t know? The biggest thing I learned that I did not know is that with a
project like this, the schedule you create for it may not work out
the way you plan. I set the dates for when we met with the
interviewees for filming, but several of the meetings got pushed
back for one reason or another. One person cancelled their
service altogether at the last minute and then cancelled it again
in the next week. I had to improvise there. I still got my interview
from her, but instead of getting B-Roll from her service, I got B-
Roll from various locations around the campus. My takeaway
from this project is that a video production schedule is likely to
change as production continues. What I learned that when this
happens, I need to come up with solutions for the project. I need
to get inventive with the production of the video. Coming up
with quick, but resourceful solutions is key.

Why is that important? It is important because while it is crucial to plan out how a
production will go. It is equally as important to plan out solutions
when something goes wrong. It teaches me to be more
resourceful and to be a better problem solver. This is not the
only experience this semester where we had to come up with
creative situations whenever production makes a drastic change.
When a service got cancelled, I had to come up with backup
footage. If I did not have any footage, the project would be
much harder to put together. It is also important because
knowing that anything that halts production could happen.
When we know that something happens, we can make new
plans on the spot or reschedule meetings quickly. My experience
with this project helped give me more patience and ways to
solve difficult problems in the way of a project.

22
Feedback from supervisor. Be specific! Dr. Erik gave me positive feedback in general. He told me that I
have been great to work with and he appreciated everything I
did. Once again, he told me to work on my confidence because
he told me how it gets in the way of my skills. He probably tells
me this because being nervous and jumpy hurts my mindset
which hurts my work. He also told me that when I get ready for
an interview for a job, I need to prepare better. In this scenario, I
knew virtually nothing about the Foley Center until the interview
and it took me two interviews to land the position. Finally, he
told me one way to be a better employee is to ask, “what would
you like me to do” instead of “what do you want me to do.”
Instead of being told what to do, I could come up with ideas and
my boss could tell me which direction to go. I also need to come
up with my own options and solutions. He wants me to build
more independence in the future because I could be a stronger
worker if I became less reliant on my boss.

My level of comfort on the job (on a scale of 1-5). Explain 4. I feel much more productive than ever before. The most
stressful part was having the production times scheduled and
preparing for these events. Once I started interviewing the
members of the Foley Center, I felt much more comfortable in
my role and I even fell into a leadership role as the director of
the project. I felt so much better when I started filming, but the
moments before filming were pretty stressful. As for the editing
portion, I feel comfortable editing, but I am still trying to figure
out how video will come together.

What was the most difficult task/challenge? The most difficult challenge these last few weeks was editing the
video together. I am still working on editing the video as of this
report. What makes it so difficult is finding the right video clips
and sound bites to make a cohesive message or narrative. Some

23
of the interviews were pretty long so watching them again to
find the right clips for each interview can make for a tedious
process. The hardest part about editing the piece together is
finding out how to make the interviews create a clear and
coherent message in a visually interesting way. It is also hard to
decide which B-Roll to use because I was limited with my
choices. I also want to use clips to make the footage consistent
with the audio. It does not help that if there is one thing wrong
with the video, it can decrease the quality of the product.
Filming for the project was difficult, but editing the footage
together feels like a cryptic puzzle.
My progress (Describe the improvement) My direction of the production of the video showed me that I
can lead. I led two other students on what shots to get and
where to put the boom mic. It was a small team, but I still felt
like I was in charge of how the video would be produced. My
leadership skills are really shining, and I am finding that I could
be a good director for small projects. I felt like I finally became a
leader in the SHC community. Hopefully carry it on this
leadership after college. The only sad thing for me is that doing
this internship made me realize that I was a lot more capable
than I initially thought I was, but I held back for years because of
my fear of failure.

Other comments I am so thankful for this opportunity. It went in more directions

than I thought it would, but it was a great experience overall. It
boosted my confidence by using my skills in a work environment.
The best part about the internship is that I learned a lot about
volunteer service, both in person and virtual. I also learned how
to become a better leader which was my major goal when I
started this internship. I still need to work on my leadership and
confidence, but I think I came a long way.

24
As far as my projects are concerned, Dr. Erik wants me to
continue working on both the video and the graphic design
projects after we return in January. There are still edits that need
to be made and I will be happy to make them. Also, the article
for the Catholic Schools did not get written because I got too
busy with the filming and production project, but I can still write
during Christmas Break. I will see what I can do about that and
how I will approach the material. Even though the class is
ending, my internship at the Foley Center could continue in
2021.
