Burn an ISO to a USB Flash Drive

INTRODUCTION

1
Physical DVD drives are becoming a thing of the past as the size of our PCs continue
shrink and new form factors are emerging. Microsoft distributes Windows 7 and Windows 8 on
physical discs or images of DVDs called ISO files that are typically burned to physical media.
The best way to install Windows on these devices is to use a USB flash drive that contains the
Windows installation files. As an extra benefit, modern USB flash drives are typically much
faster than DVDs resulting in a quick install.

Installation Proper

A. OPTION 1: Manual Method

1. Preparing the USB flash drive.

First we need to format the USB flash drive to
erase any existing data on the drive. Click on
the Start Button and then Computer to bring
up your drives.

2. Next, right click on the removable USB flash drive and select
Format.

3. Preparing the source file.

Now it is time to extract the setup from a Windows 7/8 ISO

image file. If you have a physical Windows install DVD then
skip to step 3.
To extract the files from the ISO file you will need WinRAR.
If you do not already have WinRAR download
(http://www.rarlabs.com/download.htm) and install that now.

Once you have WinRAR installed navigate to the ISO file in

explorer and right click on the file and select the bottom
Extract to <folder name> option.

The ISO file will now be extracted to a sub-folder with the same name as the ISO file.
This can take a few minutes to complete.

4. Copying source files to USB flash drive

The final step is to copy the

install source onto the USB flash
drive in a way that will allow the

2
Windows 7/8 install to boot up. The trick here is to use XCopy. Depending on where
your source files are located there are two different methods to copy the files onto the
flash
drive.

Open up command prompt and navigate to the directory you extracted the source
files from the ISO file with the CD command. Then, run XCOPY *.* J: /e and hit Enter
to start the copy. Be sure to replace J with the drive letter of your USB flash drive.

5. Installing Windows 7/8 from the USB flash Drive

Once the file copy has completed you are ready to plug the USB flash drive into
your computer. Turn it on and hit the keyboard shortcut to bring up the boot menu for
your model. Typically it is F12 or F1. After you select your USB flash drive the
Windows 7/8 installation should begin to load. At this point, installing Windows is the
same as on a normal laptop or a desktop.

B. OPTION 2: AUTOMATIC METHOD

Microsoft now has a free

utility that will
automatically make a
bootable USB flash drive
from a Windows 7/8 ISO
image file.

Simply download the tool,

specify the location of
your ISO file and the
wizard will do everything
for you.

1. First browse to the

location of your
Windows 7 ISO file and
click Next.

2. Select USB device…this

also helps you burn the
ISO to DVD as well if
you need that option.

3
3. Choose your flash drive and
click Begin copying.

4. Now just wait for the process

to complete. The drive will be
formatted and files copied to
the flash drive.

5.
5. When the process is finished you will be able to
see the files on the flash drive as you would if you
opened the installation disc. Now you can start the
installation on any computer that allows you to
boot from a USB drive.

1. What are the 2 methods to use for the proper installation.

2. What is the tool used to extract compressed file.?

4
3. What is the command used to copy files including sub directory.?
4. What is the name of the free utility that is used to make a bootable USB Flash.?
5. What is the name of the file that is an image that is typically burned on a physical
media.?

Read the Information Sheet 1.2 very well then find out how much you can remember and
how much you learned by doing Self-check 1.2.

INSTALLING (NOS) SERVER OPERATING SYSTEM

Learning Objectives:

1. Enumerate and perform and the procedure in installation of operating system.

INTRODUCTION

Now that you have a working system it’s time to think about installing an operating
system. It’s best to leave the installation of additional components (like soundcards, modems,
and second video cards) and peripherals (printers, joysticks, etc.) until after the OS install in
order to allow the plug n’ play features of the OS to do their stuff.

Pre-Installation Checklist
Before the installation proper double check these as a requirement:
Check system requirements
 Make sure you can boot with your USB Flash Disk or DVD/CD drive
 Consider upgrading your BIOS
 Backup your data

Installation Proper
1. Put the Flash Drive in the USB Port, Then power on the CPU. In the BIOS Settings,
make sure that the first boot device is set to USB support. If you see a message about
hitting any key to boot from USB drive, do so now.

1. After booting up from your install disk,

you will arrive at a language and
preferences screen. Once you have
chosen those options, you get to the
Operating System Selection page.

5
Depending on your license and the purpose of your server, there are a variety of options
to choose from.

2. We get to read the standard End User License Agreement

3. Since we’re doing a base install and not

an upgrade, so we choose the Custom
(advanced) option.

4. We’ve got a blank 24 GB disk, so we’re

just going to install it there. If you want to
create a partition out of the available drive
space or reformat a drive, then choose
Drive options (advanced).

5.
Windows will take a little while with your
install, and reboot a few times.

6. Once the install is finished, we’re prompted

to change our password before logging in.

6
7. Windows requires that you have a strong
password, seven characters long with at least
three of the four following: uppercase letter,
lowercase letter, numeral, or symbol. You’ll
want to make sure you write it down
somewhere for now, because if you forget it
later, the entire install will have to be re-
done.

8. The Initial Configuration Tasks window pops

up as soon as you logon. You could also type
in Oobe.exe in the Command Prompt to arrive
here.

9. One of the first things we want to correct is the

time, so choose Set time zone. Make sure that
you set the time zone first, because the date and
time will shift after.

10. Next we want to choose Configure

Networking. The first server installed in a
network needs to be a Domain Controller, and
since they require a static IP, we are going to
need to set one up now. Double-click on Local
Area Connection, and once the information
box pops up, click on Properties.

7
11. Click on Internet Protocol Version 4 in the
Networking box, then click Properties.
Change the radial button to Use the following
IP address: and then enter the settings for
your specific server and network IP
addresses. When you’re finished, click OK to
save those settings.

That’s all there is to doing a base install of Windows

Server 2008 R2
