Bar Model Bootcamp Lesson Plan 

10/9/20 
- Students will complete attitude pre-assessment via Google forms and 
Peardeck. (10 minutes)  

10/12/20 
- Introduce part/whole bar models using dry-erase board 
- Explain empty bar model diagram (5 minutes)  
- What happens when I label parts of the diagram? 
- How does it change the meaning of the diagram? (5 
minutes)  
- Give an example diagram with only one part labelled, have 
students create meaning and context using dry erase boards. (10 
minutes)  
- Students practice using Kami and bar model diagrams. Create 
two of their own part/whole models.(20 minutes) 
- In breakout rooms, share diagrams and challenge each 
other to find solutions. (10 minutes)  

10/13/20 
- Introduce comparison bar models using dry-erase board. 
- Explain an empty comparison diagram. (5 minutes)  
- What happens when I label parts of the diagram?  
- How does it change the meaning of the diagram? (5 
minutes) 
- Give an example with only one part labelled, have students 
create meaning and context using dry erase boards. (10 minutes)  
- Students practice using Kami and bar model diagrams. Create 
two of their own comparison models.(20 minutes) 
- In breakout rooms, share diagrams and challenge each 
other to find solutions. (10 minutes)  

10/14/20 
- Use a bar model bootcamp slideshow and Peardeck to walk through 
actual word problems. Slideshow should incorporate names of students, 
experiences that they might encounter, and be as close to real life 
situations as possible. For example, “Gabrielle loves to bake. She baked 
200 cookies for Madison’s birthday. Madison loved the cookies so much 
that she said she could eat 4 times as many cookies. If there were 12 
friends at the party, how many cookies could Madison have eaten?” (20 
minutes)  
- Students demonstrate drawing a bar model for each problem. Have 
them use Peardeck to attempt several on their own. (15 minutes)  
- Share out their diagrams with the class (from Peardeck dashboard). 
Remove pieces of information to see how the problem changes. (15 
minutes)  

10/15/20  
- Students create their own problems and demonstrate how using a bar 
model would help solve them using dry erase boards, notebooks, and 
paper. (30 minutes)  
- Meet in a small group with three students to check-in and review 
material using breakout rooms on Zoom. (20 minutes)  
- Provide practice problems for students to work through in partnerships.  
- Share out solutions (20 minutes)  

10/16/20 
- Conduct attitude survey and feelings about bar models and word 
problems after having been through the Bar Model Bootcamp. (10 
minutes)  
- Compare attitudes to initial surveys. 
- Have students complete one word problem, on a dry erase board, and 
record a video on Flipgrid walking through their solutions and strategies. 
(15 minutes)
