Math 212, Homework 2.

Part I. Solve the following exercises from P. Olver book. 1.6, 2.1.3(c,e,f), 2.2.1, 2.2.2(b,c)
(You do not have to sketch the graphs), 2.2.4 (without using the method of characteristics).

Part II. Additional exercises.

Problem 1. Solve the following initial boundary value problems in u := u(t, x)

 
ut + ux + u = e2x−t 2 ut + ux = cos(x − t)

 

1)  2)
u(0, x) = 0  u(x, x) = x2
 

Problem 2. Solve the following PDEs in u := u(x, y) using the given change of variable
1) x ux − y u y + y2 u = y2 ; s = x, t = xy.

2) xy uxx + x2 uxy − y ux = 0; s = x2 − y2 , t = y.

3) x(y2 + 1)ux + y(1 − y2 )u y = 0; r = x/y, s = xy.

Problem 3. Find the general form of solutions to the following PDE in u := u(x, y)

uxyy + 25ux = 0,

Problem 4. Consider the following nonuniform transport initial value problem

ut + xux = x2

u(0, x) = x2

1) Defining the change of variable map u(t, x) = v(t, s(t, x)) with s(t, x) = xe−t , solve the
homogeneous nonunifrom transport PDE

ut + xux = 0.

2) Conclude a solution to the given initial value problem.
