Math 212, Homework 3.

Problem 1. Solve the following quasilinear PDEs.

1) ux + u y = u2 , u(x, 0) = h(x).

2) ut + u2 ux = 0, u(0, x) = x.

3) ux + (x + y)u y = 1, u(x, −x) = 0.

2xy
4) ux + u y = 0, u(x, x + x3 ) = h(x).
1 + x2
5) −xux + yu y − xu2 = 0, u(x, 1) = e−x .

6) x2 ux − y2 u y = 2(y − x)u, u(x, x) = x.

7) (y + 1)ux + (x + 1)u y = u2 , u(x, −x) = 1

ln x
.

8) (y + u)ux + yu y = x − y, u(x, 1) = 1 + x.

Problem 2. Consider the following IVP in u := u(t, x)

t ut − x ux = x2 − x2 u;

= f (x).

u(0, x)

1. Prove that if the given IVP admits a solution then f solves the following ODE

f 0 (x) − x f (x) = −x (?)

then find the corresponding functions f .

2. Verify that if f solves the ODE (?), the IVP has infinitely many solutions of the form
u(t, x) = F(xt) ex /2 + 1 with F arbitrary C1 function with F(0) = f (0) − 1.
2

Notice: We showed that the given IVP has a solution if and only if f (x) = Cex /2 + 1, and in this
2

case there are infinitely many solutions.

Problem 3. Show that the following BVP

−(x + 1)ux + y2 u y = u u(r2 , r) = r,

has no solution near the point (1, −1).
