1. Determine the solution of each of the following initial-value problems:

(a) utt − c2 uxx = 0, u(x, 0) = cos x, ut (x, 0) = e−1 .

(b) utt − c2 uxx = 0, u(x, 0) = x2 , ut (x, 0) = cos x.
(c) utt − 25uxx = 0, u(x, 0) = sin x, ut (x, 0) = 0.

2. Determine the solution of the initial boundary-value problem

utt = 4uxx , x > 0, t > 0,

u(x, 0) = | sin x|, x > 0,
ut (x, 0) = 0, x ≥ 0,
u(0, t) = 0, t ≥ 0.

3. Obtain the solution of the following initial boundary value problem:

utt = 4uxx , 0 < x < 1, t > 0,

u(x, 0) = 0, 0 ≤ x ≤ 1,
ut (x, 0) = x(1 − x), 0 ≤ x ≤ 1,
u(0, t) = 0, u(1, t) = 0, t ≥ 0.

4. Find the solution of the initial boundary-value problem

utt = uxx , 0 < x < ∞, t > 0,
