My Philosophy of Education

My first teaching experience for me came at a very early age; as the oldest of 5, I

had the joy of teaching my younger brothers and sister their colors, alphabets, and how to

count numbers. I say this was a joy, because I enjoyed reading a book to them, while

babysitting, as opposed to trying to get them to sit down, be still. Getting some crayons

and showing them how to write numbers, soothed both them and me. So it has been said

since I was a child, that teaching was the profession for me. But life sent me down other

paths; but I have never lost the joy of sitting down with children teaching them something

new, then seeing the joy in their eyes when they realize that they have learned a new

skill, or word, or sound, or number.

My philosophy of education is that every child deserves the best education that

can be provided to them. This I bring into the classroom with me. Therefore, I as the

teacher, bring my best self into the classroom. I model behavior, that is conducive to a

learning environment for my students. I acknowledge that no child is the same, but each

child deserves the same from me; that is to provide them the skills and foundation to

become successful adults. Therefore, I will scaffold on those things they already know,

and then build on those things. Having acquired knowledge of standards and testing

requirements of the classroom, I have learned that there is room for flexibility in learning.

And while testing and hitting benchmarks are important, being present in teaching is also

important. I always want to be present in my classroom, and to my students as well.

My lesson plans and how they are implemented my classroom will be geared

toward inclusive learning. Lessons will center on those things that make us different, in a

manner that celebrates those differences, but also on the things that make us the same.

Learning about places where we came from will not be loaded with stereotypes about the

people who came from those places, but remarkable facts, that will give my students a

sense a pride. Assessment will also be implemented in my class. I want no child left

behind; therefore, I must know who is lagging, thumbs up, no help needed, thumbs

sideways, need a little help, thumbs down need a lot of help. Therefore, being present in

the classroom can allow me to empower my students to reach higher goals.

Finally, my goals are to continue gaining education and knowledge of the

teaching profession, with end being gaining my teaching license, and finally being able to

do what gave me joy so long ago; teaching children with a joy in heart of watching them

learn something new, and then building on what they learned. And then watching them

fly, as they reach new heights of learning what they can do when they are given the

opportunity.
