Activity 1: Read t he following text and complete with the correct present continuous form

The end of the bicycle kingdom?

The bicycle industry began in China in the 1930s,and soon there were bicycles everywhere. People
called China the bicycle kingdom. But now the situation is changing change).The economy is
grewing (grow), and Chinese people are making (make) more money. They aren’t buying (not
buy) bicycles, they are buying (buy) cars. In 2005 there were 20 million cars in China. Now experts
are saying (say) the number will be 140 million in the year 2020.

Activity 2: Listen to a report about the Mid-Levels Escalators in Hong Kong. As you listen,
complete the following sentences. (You can find the audio in Google classroom)

1. I am standing at the top


2. Every day thousands of people use this escalator
3. It´s 8 am here in Hong Kong and right now the escalators are going down
4. As I am standing here literally hundreds of people are coming the entrance
5. I use them to go down to my office in the morning. And I come back at about 7 pm.

Activity 3:

Read and complete the sentences with the verb in the correct present continuous form.

Grammar: Present simple vs present continuous

Activity 1: Read the following information about Mike and complete the first paragraph with the
present simple and the second paragraph with the present continuous

Habits and routines

Mike is a typical student. He usually wakes (wake) up at 5:00. Then takes (take) a shower and
then has breakfast. After six he leaves home (leave home) to go to the university. He always takes
(take/always) the bus and the subway. He never travels (travel/never) by taxi because is so
expensive. After class he walks (walk) to the bus stop. Sometimes he goes (go) to the subway
station on foot.

Temporary event

This month there are some changes in Mike´s routines. This month he is waking up (wake up) at
7:00. Then he takes shower and then has breakfast. This month he is leaving home (leave home)
at 9:00. This week he isn’t taking (not take) the bus and the subway because they are being
repaired. He is taking (take) taxi instead.

Activity 2. Complete the following sentences, one with the present simple and one with the
present continuous.

Activity 3. Read the following information about Harold, a famous pianist. Complete the text with
the present simple or present continuous. Pay attention to time expressions

Habits, routines, facts VS temporary events (present simple and present continuous)

Harold Black's a famous pianist. He gives (give) two or three concerts every week. He travels
(travel) a lot. This week he's in New York and he is staying (stay) at an expensive hotel. He's at his
hotel now. He is having (have) his breakfast in the dining−room. He is drinking (drink) a cup of
coffee and he is reading (read) a newspaper. Harold's always is very busy. He plays (play) the
piano regularly. He practices (practice) for four hours every day. He goes (go) to bed late and he
always gets up (get up) early. But he sometimes gets (get) dressed too quickly, and this morning
he is wearing (wear) one blue sock and one red one!

Activity 4. Decide if the following sentences refer to habits and routines or a temporary
event/activities happening in this moment and write the verb in the correct form. Present simple
or present continuous.

Activity 5. Read and complete the conversation in the workbook page 52 grammar 2 and choose
present simple or present continuous. Decide if the refer to a habit, routine, fact or a temporary
event or an activity happening in this moment
