Vocabulary Activity Planning Sheet

Directions for Full Credit: Use the vocabulary activity planning sheet to plan your strategy instruction. Please submit this
completed template to Canvas.

Name: Anthony Orduno

Strategy: Jeopardy
Content Area and ELA Standards: Chemistry- Thermodynamics/Thermochemistry
Objective: Students will be able to determine the meaning of latin/greek root words common in
science and be able to define science terms through a game of jeopardy. Students will have mastered
the concepts if they are able to gain a point total of $2800 (out of $4000).

Vocabulary Strategy Awareness & Explanation (Purpose for selecting the strategy)
How will provide students with a clear picture of the why and how?
Vocabulary can be learned best from creating connections. For example, if we know that
community means sharing similar ideas/identities, etc. then covalent bonding means
that there is a sharing of electrons. This strategy allows for students to create
connections between latin/greek roots and definitions to infer the definition of an
unknown word. With the jeopardy, students are allowed to build that root definition by
being exposed to multiple connections.

Vocabulary Strategy Procedure-the “how-to”

Detail how you will introduce the vocabulary concept rooted in Latin/Greek roots, how you will propel
understanding of the generative use of these roots, and finally, how you will establish the proficiency of
the objective through an effective closing that can be assessed.
A game of jeopardy will be used to introduce vocabulary that have latin/greek roots. In
order for students to assess critically the meaning of latin/greek roots, the class will
begin with $100 level questions where an easy word that contains the latin/greek root
of that topic which students will then define. From levels $200-$400, the words will get
more difficult until the final word of that topic is a vocab word specific to science. By the
$400 level, students should have been able to define the latin/greek root meaning and
be able to infer the definition of the vocab word. The four topics, or latin/greek roots
are therme leading to thermochemistry, En- leading to endothermic, Ex- leading to
exothermic, and Iso- leading to isothermic.
Peer Reflection: Enlist your partner in assessing your vocabulary activity in depth. Reflect on their
assessment before implementing the activity in your digital learning experience. (optional
implementation) They will be looking at a few factors:

1. A discipline-specific topic is identified and a clear and creative vocabulary activity is

created for one or two Latin or Greek roots.
2. The activity builds generative knowledge and allows the student to think critically about
the words.
Have your peer write a 1-2 paragraph detailed reflection about your strategy based on their own self-
assessment. (Please ask them to be honest as any critiques should be welcomed and reciprocated.
Additionally, your assessment does not impact their grade.)
● How did the structure of this strategy support learning in their discipline specifically?
● What were their strengths and areas for growth (please consider both their planning and your
instruction of the strategy).
