Drilling Technology is one of the vital courses which defines the core competency of a

petroleum engineering undergraduate. It is a four credits subject comprising of three lectures

and one tutorial class. Pre-requisites to this course are basics of fluid mechanics, engineering
mechanics, mathematics and chemistry. It captures both fundamental underlying principles,
design, operation and troubleshooting practices. On a broader note, this applied course
encompasses matters ranging from geological pressure, blowouts, drill string design, drilling
fluid, cementation, wellbore problems, casing, directional drilling and environmental issues
of drilling operations. Drilling technology holds mathematical derivations as well as 3-D
figures to perceive real-life operations. However, traditional classroom teaching include chalk
and duster method combined with computer-aided presentations whenever deemed necessary.
Near about 60 to 70% of the total time is devoted in solving industrial case studies that aim to
bridge the gap between theory and practicality. Hence, face-to-face interaction, group
discussions for decision making and one-to-one doubt clearing sessions are often carried out
to bring out the best from this course.

Comments

1. Traditional classroom has a lot of advantages in comparison to online learning. More

interaction, more learning, more questions, and more attention. Online learning has a
lot of distractions, like bad Internet, constant distractions and not able to see solutions
clearly. So I prefer traditional classroom than online learning!

2. Traditional classroom is more better mode of learning because we can interact face to
face with the teachers which not only motivates us but also helps us to gain more
knowledge through teachers. Some subjects especially require proper drawings and
labelling and something which only can be taught in classroom because there is a
difference between virtual explanation and real explanation. Moreover, many students
doesn't have proper access to Internet because they are in remote areas. So they are
not able to attend apl the online lectures. By face to face interaction teachers also get
to know whether we are understanding the concept or not.

3. Traditional classroom learning mode is far more better than online learning mode as in
online learning mode the instructor is unaware of the issues the student is facing as
most of the time due to poor connectivity we got disconnected and we miss the key
concepts and feel difficulty in retracing the concepts and moreover if the
disconnectivity is for a long time we don't even know what we have missed so that we
can ask the instructor.
4. For the subject like drilling Engineer traditional classroom is better as it's not a
theoretical course.
