Writing to Learn Strategy-Think Like a Journalist

I will use the “Think Like a Journalist” strategy to identify a historical concept. The strategy uses the 5
W’s and How in a series of boxes. Students will need to write down the answers to the questions after a
mini lecture at the start of class. However, the classroom will be divided into a series of three groups,
each with a different concept. Within the lecture, one group will be “The Federalist Papers,” another is
“Articles of Confederation” and the third will be “Bill of Rights.” After they have used the strategy in
their notes, they will transfer this to a Padlet where the class can fill the details in for a “take-home”
study document. The Padlet will be organized in the same way, however they will need to transfer their
bulleted or unstructured notes into a proper full sentence once in the Padlet.
