EWIS Stands for Electrical Wiring Interconnect System.

The objective of EWIS is focused

on the need to improve the code for large airplanes together with the requirements for
continued airplanes in the field of electrical wiring interconnection systems. In recent years
the spectacular advance of electrical and electronic technology together evolved to a clear
increase in the demand for electric power aboard the aircraft which the electrical system
begins to replace others systems such as hydraulic, pneumatic or mechanical. As part of
FAA regulation, all of the parts of the EWIS must be qualified to the environment in which
they operate and must be appropriate for the intended function. EWIS components are
designed to an accepted aerospace part standard, these are typically verified with a defined
set of qualification tests.
25.1703 Function and installation

Each ewis component installed in any area of the aircraft must:

 Be of a kind and design appropriate to its intended function

 Be installed according to limitations specified for the ewis components
 Perform the function for which it was intended degrading the airworthiness of the
airplane.
 Be designed and installed in a way that will minimize mechanical strain

Mean time between failure

It is important the life time of the wire, and its purpose that is why you need to specify for
how many years the wiring is designed:

20 is designed to not be replaced

7 is designed to be replaced.

All departments are linked to the electrical department because this gives the most
functioning to the airplane, this is conformed with a lot of systems that have systems,

One challenge that the electric team could encounter is the one of designing wire into an
aircraft, the process which they have to follow is the next one:
The gates

 System requirements review

 System design review
 Preliminary design review
 Critical design review
 Production readiness review
 Test readiness review
 Flight readiness review

The days of optimism

 System requirements review

 Build a schedule of deliverables
 Standup an engineering design team of varying skill levels and experience
 3:4:3 rule
 Educate team on the rules, tools and expectations

3:4:3 Rule

This rule represents 3 groups combined with different characteristics and tasks within the
process of making the work and they are classified in this way:

The first 3 people usually are the ones in charge of making your schedules, fix your
problems and work between the systems, they are invaluable for the process.

The next group of 4 people are the correctors they just come in, they only want to be sitting
in their desks, they don’t assist to meetings, they just want to get their 8 or 10 hours of
work and go home, but after all they put out really good work

The last 3 people group are the ones controlling the human resources, they know just how
many work they have to do to not get fired and everybody carries them, so the challenge is
you have to educate them
Another challenges to consider inside the electrical design are:

1. Wasting time on tasks

When you are designing an electrical system, generally it involves two distinct types of
activity: You use your knowledge and skills to build and configure a system that you need
to perform a required function. Then you spend lots of time repeating tasks that are
essential to the design, every minute performing those same actions, again and again, is the
time you could be spending configuring your next electrical design,

2. Human errors

We are all only human, with all the noise and distractions that you can find there, this could
lead to mistakes and omissions in our designs.

3. Wasting time researching parts details

When you first start designing a project, searching far and wide for data sheets and product
specifications through online searches, paper catalogues or perhaps scanning all the
information you have from a previous project.

Challenges handling a new project in electric design

Electric design is a very special and delicate thing to work on so you have to be careful
when working with components, that’s why you have to do a lot of recruiting, training,
evaluating, remunerating, and offer a safe environment, with a code of ethics and fair
treatment for employees of the organization., for example:

 Determine the nature of the function of each employee

 Plan staffing needs and recruit candidates for each position
 Select candidates for each position
 Apply induction and training programs for new workers
 Evaluate performance
 Train and develop current employees
 Promote the commitment of employees
