1. GENERAL
This specification covers the requirements for hot rolled low carbon and cold rolled
low carbon steel sheet, strip and plate suitable for the manufacture of automotive
parts.
2. APPLICATION
3.
Grades covered by this specification are for general use. Cold rolled steels are
used for the majority of body parts to achieve closer thickness tolerances and
surface finish requirements.
3. REFERENCES
4. SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS
The steel grade must be specified on the part drawing by using the
designations shown in Section 6, typical examples are shown in
Section 5.1 examples 2 or 3.
When a given part design requires a specific material property such as minimum
yield strength, the drawing note must always show the steel type and grade required
as shown in Section 6.
2 “Steel HN 1461 Type 1A Hot rolled formable sheet steel of deep drawing
Grade 3” grade to AS1594-HA3.
Minimum yield strength 200 MPa.

Surface finish and quality should be negotiated between the steel mill and parts
manufacturer to be appropriate to the final use of the part. In all cases, scale and
rust free steel must be used.
Sheet steel used for the visible exterior surfaces of vehicles must be cold rolled
material and have no defects which would be visible after painting.
8. PAINTABILITY REQUIREMENTS
For body-in-white parts and other parts to be painted in the Holden production
paint system additional requirements, summarised below, apply for the supplied
steel and the parts made from that steel.
8.2 Oils
Mill oils, shipping oils, press oils, etc., applied to the material by the steel mill
and the parts manufacturer must be removable in the Holden phosphate pre-
cleaner system.
8.3 Phosphating
The supplied steel and the parts made from that steel shall be clean and free
of scale, stains, corrosion, debris or any other defects which would be
objectionable on the finished part.
