TENSES
What is Tense?
A Tense is a form taken by a verb to indicate the time of
action.

Types of Tenses:
There are mainly three types of Tenses, they are:-
1. The Present Tense:
The verb that refers to the present time is said to be in
the present tense as

I sing because I like singing.

2. The Past Tense:


The verb that refers to the past time is in the Past Tense.

I studied mathematics last night.

3. The Future Tense:


The verb that refers to the future time is in the Future
Tense, as
I shall prepare for my exams.

Each of these tenses are further sub-divided into four


types like:

1. The Present Tense:

(a) Simple Present Tense

(b) Present Continuous Tense


(c) Present perfect tense
(d) Present perfect continous tense

2.The Past Tense:

(a) Simple Past Tense

(b) Past Continuous Tense


(c) Past perfect tense
(d) Past perfect continous tense

3.The Future Tense:

(a) Simple Future Tense


(b) Future Continuous Tense
(c) Future perfect tense
(d) Future perfect continous tense

Present Tense:
Simple Present Tense is used:-
1. To express a habitual action as

Example
He reads newspaper every morning.

Present Continuous Tense is used:


1. For an action going on at the time of speaking.

Example

They are travelling to islamabad.

Present Perfect Tense is used:


1. To express an action that has just been completed; as

Example
He has just finished his office work.
Present Perfect Continuous Tense is used:
1. For an action which began at sometime in the past and
still continue.

Example

We have been doing group study since morning.

Past Tense:
Simple Past Tense is used in the past:
1. To indicate an action completed, often occurring with
an adverb of time.

Example

I finished my all important work yesterday.

Past Continuous Tense is used:-


1. To denote an action going on, sometime in the past

Example:

He was listening to the teacher carefully.

Past Perfect Tense is used:-


1. To describe an action completed in the past.

Example

I had cleaned my house before the guests arrived.

Past Perfect Continuous is used:


1. For an action that began before a certain time in the
past and continued up to that time as

Example

They had been doing their work since morning.


Future Tense:
Simple Future Tense is used:-
1. For an action that has still to take place.

Example

I shall go to visit to lahore next week.

Future Continuous Tense is used:


1. To represent an action as going on at some time in the
future as

Example

He will be arriving anytime from now.

Future Perfect Tense:


Future Perfect Tense is used to indicate the completion
of an action in a certain time in the future.

Example
The shopkeeper will have returned the coustomers
money back.

SUBJECT VERB AGREEMENT


DEFINITION:

Subject verb agreement refers to the fact that


the subject and verb in a sentence must agree in
number. In other words, they both must be
singular or they both must be plural. You can't
have a singular subject with a plural verb or vice
versa.

FOR EXAMPLE:

My dog always growls at the postal carrier.


Basketballs roll across the floor.
I don't understand the assignment.
These clothes are too small for me.
Peter doesn't like vegetables.
