CLASSROOM RULES AND CONSEQUENCES

Classroom Rules and Consequences

Discipline within the classroom for young adults can come in many forms. There are

forms where it’s not helpful and harms the student and there are forms where it ends up being a

key component to effective classroom management. These consist of strategies teachers use to

help manage student behaviors and attitudes during class-time. Since my content area is higher-

level math, I believe my use of disciplinary actions will be different. When students arrive at my

course, they will have been through previous classes and have a solid understanding of

expectations in a classroom setting. They are becoming young adults and I have trust that they

will keep the behavior they managed and built throughout their previous years.

Some discipline strategies I plan on using start from day one. When classes meet for the

first day of school, I will establish expectations, rules, and guidelines for behavior and attitudes.

This will be a concise outline that allows the students to see and know what is expected of them.

During the school year, supportive discipline will be used to help keep the students focused and

on track. For example, reminding them of the expectations to help them refocus. This can look

like a discussion with peers and classroom correction. Lastly, there is a form of discipline for

students who needs extra support. This is focused on the consequences of a student not following

the guidelines. This consists of private correction. Throughout all of this, the teacher is expected

to stay calm, fair, positive, and their intentions should be for the greater good. It’s not to

embarrass students or point them out, it’s to be constructive and to help the student refocus.
