QUESTION 6

6.1 On the 2nd of January 2015, a company bought a new printer for

R150 000.

6.1.1 Calculate the book value of the printer on the 2nd January

2017, if the value of the printer decreases by 20%

annually, on the reducing-balance method. (3)

6.1.2 The printer has to be replaced when its book value is

R49 152. At the beginning of which year will the printer

have to be replaced? Show ALL calculations. (4)

6.1.3 The company uses the R49 152 toward the cost of a new

printer which sells at R280 000. It sets up a sinking fund

which pays 8,5% p.a. compounded quarterly, to cover

the balance. The first deposit is made on the 2nd April

2015 and every three months thereafter until the 2

January 2020.

Calculate the amount that should be deposited every

three months. (4)

6.2 Lerato wishes to apply for a home loan. The bank charges

interest at 11% per annum, compounded monthly. She can afford

a monthly deposit of R9 000 and wants to repay the loan over a

period of 15 years. She will make the first monthly payment one

month after the loan is granted.

QUESTION 9

A piece of wire 6 metres long is cut into two pieces. One piece, x

metres long, is bent to form a square ABCD. The other piece is

bent into a U-shape so that it forms a rectangle BEFC when

placed next to the square, as shown in the diagram below.

Calculate the value of x, for which the sum of the areas enclosed

by the wire, will be a maximum. (7)

10.1 A and B are mutually exclusive events. If it is given that the

P(A) = 0,35 and P(B) = 0,52 determine:

10.2 At a public school there are 120 Grade 12 learners. All of them take

English as a subject. 86 take Mathematics and 54 take History.

40 learners take both Mathematics and History.

10.2.1 Represent the information above in a Venn diagram (3)

10.2.2 Using your diagram, determine the probability that a

randomly chosen Grade 12 learner Studies Mathematics

but not History. (2)

10.3 There are m yellow balls and 4 blue balls in a bag. Anton

randomly selects one ball from the bag, records his choice and

returns the ball to the bag. He then randomly selects a second

ball from the bag, records his choice and returns the ball to the

bag. The probability that Anton will select two balls of different

colours from the bag is 32%.

Calculate how many yellow balls are in the bag. (5)
