RESPONSE WRITING

Excerpt 1

1. In my opinion, I think it is splendid for the King, Queen forgoing their emoluments for six
months. This action portrays their concern and high morale personality towards the current
growth of the pandemic (COVID-19) while on the other hand to contain the current state of
the Malaysia’s economy. The government has also agreed to cut down two months’ salaries
of the Prime Minister and Deputy of Prime Minister to support the COVID-19 funds towards
helping out wherever possible for the citizens especially the forces of front lines such as
doctors, nurses, and law enforcements. This is also an act of generosity being shown by the
ministers despite the sudden change in parliaments members in the past few months before
the pandemic arises.
2. Apart from royalties and ministers, I suggest that people in the high-net-worth group should
take a pay cut to support the COVID-19 fund. This is because these individuals have at least
RM1 million worth of cash or assets that can be easily converted into cash. These individuals
are mostly in the Top20% (T20) category in household income having a mean income
threshold of a ballpark RM16,000.00 per annum. Furthermore, T20 possess 46.2% of the
national income share and is spending less money than other Malaysians hence putting a
more concrete justification that these high-net-worth individuals should also contribute in
the support of the COVID-19 fund.
Excerpt 2

1. The coronavirus’ origin in China has caused a backlash against Asian-Americans in the first
two months since the first positive diagnosis there. Obviously the target has been Chinese
and the assumption that those who are being victimized are of Chinese descent but the fact
that it’s the Asian face, it’s perception that they’re foreigners and again that we’re all hosts
of this infectious disease. This is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of what’s actually
happening on a daily basis, and that we need to do better, I think to reach those impacted
populations, especially those that are less likely to report incidents to various agencies and
are hesitant to report to law enforcement because of negative experiences or the feeling
that nothing can be done about these incidents of hate.
2. Racism can be justified as racial slurs or racial attacks towards a certain type of race by
another race. This form of morality is a discrimination of race and lack of civilization across
the world. I would feel very much offended and disgust if I ever witnessed a racist act in
front of me. However, if I were in the unpleasant situation, I would observe the surrounding
first before I act. If the condition is safe for me to voice out the wrongfulness of ones act of
racism, I would address the issue calmly and in an assertive manner. Suppose the situation is
otherwise, I would alert the authorities nearby and inform the situation. Based on statistics,
33% of racism happened online and only 43% happened at school. Racism happened online
can apprehend with reporting and eventually suspend accounts that shows hate-crime
towards other races. This action can act as a warning to others to watch out their online
behavior.
