Eighth Semester B. E. (Civil Engineering) Examination

TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING – II

Time : 3 Hours ] [ Max. Marks : 60

Instructions to Candidates :—
(1) All questions carry marks as indicated against them.
(2) Due credit will be given to neatness and adequate dimensions.
(3) Assume suitable data and illustrate answers with neat sketches wherever necessary.

1. (a) What are the objective of providing ballast in the permanent way ? Describe
in brief various types of ballast used. 4
OR

(b) Define "Gauge" of a railway track. What are the factors which affect the
selection of a gauge ? 4
(c) Calculate the maximum permissible train load that can be pulled by a
4-8-4 type locomotive and carrying an axle load of 25 tonnes. The train
has to run with a speed of 100 kmph on a straight level track (B.G.).
Calculate the reduction in speed if the train has to climb a gradient of
1 in 300.
If the train climbs the gradient with a curvature of 10, calculate the speed
reduction. 6

2. (a) State and explain the objective of providing Transition Curve. 4

OR

(b) Draw a neat diagram of left-hand turn out and show its various component
parts. 4
(c) On a B.G. 3 degree curve, "the equilibrium cant" is provided for a speed
of 70 kmph :
(a) Calculate the value of the equilibrium cant.

IRJQ/MS-19 / 8603 Contd.

(b) Allowing a maximum cant deficiency, what would be the maximum
permissible speed on the track. 6

3. Answer any Two of the following :––

(a) What are the modern techniques of maintenance ? 5
(b) Write short note on Push through technique. 5
(c) What is plate Laying in Railway Track Construction ? Describe any one
method of plate laying in detail. 5

4. (a) The length of runway under standard conditions is 1620 m. The airport
site has an elevation of 270 m. Its reference temperature is 32.90C. If
the runway is to be constructed with an effective gradient of 0.20 percent,
determine the corrected runway length. 5
(b) Discuss the Aircraft characteristics that influence the design of airstrip. 5
(c) Explain how runway is oriented with the help of wind-rose diagrams. 5

5. (a) Describe Instrumental Landing System. Comment why it is also called as

as Night Landing System. 5
(b) What do you understand by terminal area ? What facilities are provided
in this area ? 5
OR

(c) What are the different parking systems for an aircraft ? Discuss any one
in detail. 5

6. Answer any Two of the following :––

(a) Write the necessity of ventilation in tunnel. How the ventilation is provided
in tunnel during the construction. 5
(b) Enlist various method of tunneling in Hard Rock . Explain any one in
detail. 5
(c) What are the objects of providing drainage system inside a tunnel ? How
is it provided ? 5
