TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING – II
1. (a) What are the objective of providing ballast in the permanent way ? Describe
in brief various types of ballast used. 4
OR
(b) Define "Gauge" of a railway track. What are the factors which affect the
selection of a gauge ? 4
(c) Calculate the maximum permissible train load that can be pulled by a
4-8-4 type locomotive and carrying an axle load of 25 tonnes. The train
has to run with a speed of 100 kmph on a straight level track (B.G.).
Calculate the reduction in speed if the train has to climb a gradient of
1 in 300.
If the train climbs the gradient with a curvature of 10, calculate the speed
reduction. 6
(b) Draw a neat diagram of left-hand turn out and show its various component
parts. 4
(c) On a B.G. 3 degree curve, "the equilibrium cant" is provided for a speed
of 70 kmph :
(a) Calculate the value of the equilibrium cant.
4. (a) The length of runway under standard conditions is 1620 m. The airport
site has an elevation of 270 m. Its reference temperature is 32.90C. If
the runway is to be constructed with an effective gradient of 0.20 percent,
determine the corrected runway length. 5
(b) Discuss the Aircraft characteristics that influence the design of airstrip. 5
(c) Explain how runway is oriented with the help of wind-rose diagrams. 5
(c) What are the different parking systems for an aircraft ? Discuss any one
in detail. 5
