PARAPHRASED:

The Kapatiran-Kaunlaran Foundation, Inc. (KKFI) an institution founded in 1950. It is a latitudinarian

social foundation that focuses on working among and with the poor and marginalized sectors like young
children, out-of-school-youth, women, indigenous peoples and PWDs of the Philippine society. This
foundation is registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission and recognized by the
Department of Social Welfare and Development.

KKFI, previously named Methodist Social Center (MSC) was created to be the answer to the struggles of
the poor to achieve genuine human development and their empowerment. KKFI continues to be faithful
and abide to God’s mandate to and serve our brothers and sisters and helping them renew their selves.

REFLECTION:

1. This institution that focuses on human development among the marginalized sectors of our
country, prioritizes their physical and social growth. It heavily emphasizes education to be the
tool for empowerment among marginalized sectors, so the KKFI holds several programs about
job skills training, education from nursery to mother’s classes. The institution also has facilities
and other services set up for college students. The institution also boasts a basketball and
volleyball court, encouraging the improvement of the physical aspect of the people here.
2. For me all their stories were very inspiring, but the story that struck me the most is about the
story of Sarah Mae. I learned that before ALS, her life was hard, she lived in a cemetery and
worked to help her family and she even went to school every day with an empty stomach. It
even got to the point that she was dismissed by her teacher from going to school, because she
couldn’t come to school because of her hunger. But in the end, she persevered and worked
herself up to where she is now. I also admire the fact that she would like to be a teacher
someday, to be like the teachers she met in the KKFI. Her story affected me in a way that I feel
blessed that my life wasn’t like that. I came from a well-off family and have loving parents. This
story inspires me to work hard in achieving my dream as a doctor.
3. Although they said that they can somehow manage themselves in accreditation, I wish that the
numerous government agencies like the DSWD, TESDA, DepEd and the Philippine Council for
NGO Certification could have an easier way to renew their license. I also wish that the
government could contribute to the funding of the institution so that they wouldn’t rely on a
foreign agency.
4. Nowadays, terrible acts of man are prevalent more than ever. Acts of terrorism, human
trafficking, discrimination and other heinous acts could make us feel a little jaded about the
future of humanity. But, for me there are more people in this world that are good-hearted and
righteous than the horrible people we see on TV. It is a little sad for me, that people are more
interested in the evil within us, we should instead celebrate the good in us. For me, the way to
restore my faith in humanity is to start acting. For a CWTS student like me, I would like to help
those that are less fortunate than me. Experiencing their hardships and seeing their
determination for living another day would always restore my faith in humanity. It will always
remind me that we humans are amazing and resilient creatures.
