CHE 450 ASSIGNMENT 2 DUE DATE: 19/03/2020

1. Explain using specific examples the meaning of the following terms:

(i) A phase
(ii) Components of system
(iii) Degrees of freedom of a phase
(iv) Azeotropic mixture
(v) Eutectic Point

2. The questions that following are based on the phase diagram below of a hypothetical
substance

Temperature (oC)

(a) What is the boiling point of the substance at 30 atm pressure?

(b) What type of phase change occurs in moving from C to A?
(c) At what temperature does the triple point occur for the substance?
(e) In what form would the substance exist at standard temperature and pressure?

3. (a) Give a brief discussion of the Raoult’s law

(a) Draw a sketch diagram of boiling point -composition graph showing a positive deviation
from Raoult’s law
4. (a) Distinguish between a solution, a suspension and a colloid, and for each, give one
specific example from everyday life:

5. (a) The solubility of oxygen gas at 0 °C and 101325 Pa is 48.9 mL per litre. Calculate the
molarity of oxygen in a saturated water solution when the oxygen is under its normal pressure
in air of 0.2095 atm. (HENRY’S LAW)

6. (a) What are colligative properties? Give three examples

(b) When a 1.2g of substance is dissolved in 25g of benzene, the solution freezes at 2.73oC.
Calculate the R.M.M of the substance given that the freezing point of pure benzene is 5.4 oC
and its freezing point constant is 5.12 oC per 1000g.
