THE TAG QUESTIONS 1

In this lesson we are going to learn what Tag questions are and how they are used in English.
What are they and what are they for? Question tags are short questions that are asked at the end
of sentences in English so that the interlocutor (the person we are talking to) checks or discards the
information in the sentence expressed.
In some cases we think we know the information and we just need to reconfirm it, like when at the end
of a sentence we say in Spanish: verdad?, cierto? sí?, o no?, no es así? This is where we should use tag
questions, which are nothing more than small questions at the end of an affirmative or negative
sentence to check if we are right or wrong.

Rules and examples of Tag questions

In Spanish, these questions are simply asked by adding endings such as: verdad?, cierto?, sí?, o no?, no
es así? at the end of the sentences. However, in English it is different. To make these phrases you must
take into account several aspects. Next, we will see how these Tag Questions are asked.
1.TAG QUESTIONS WITH TO BE VERB:
When we have TO BE into a sentence, we will form the TAG QUESTION with TO BE

IMPORTANT: affirmative sentence…………….. Negative Tag Question

Negative sentence…………………. Affirmative Tag Question
EXAMPLES:

You are in the Basketball team, AREN’T YOU?

(To Be) (To Be)

Affirmative sentence Negative Tag Question

(Tu estas en el equipo de Baloncesto, Verdad?)

Cierto?)
No es así?)

You aren’t in the Basketball team, ARE YOU?

(To Be) (To Be)

Negative sentence Affirmative Tag Question

(Tú no estás en el equipo de Baloncesto, Verdad?)

As we can see in the examples, the TAG QUESTIONS are at the end of the
sentence and it is formed with TO BE. It is the same if TO BE is in the present,
in the past or in the future.

You were in the Basketball team, WEREN’T YOU?

(To Be) (To Be)

Affirmative sentence Negative Tag Question

(Tu estabas en el equipo de Baloncesto, Verdad?)

Cierto?)
No es así?)

You weren’t in the Basketball team, WERE YOU?

(To Be) (To Be)

Negative sentence Affirmative Tag Question

(Tú no estabas en el equipo de Baloncesto, Verdad?)

You will be in the Basketball team, WON’T YOU BE?

(To Be) (To Be)

Affirmative sentence Negative Tag Question

(Tu estarás en el equipo de Baloncesto, Verdad?)

Cierto?)
No es así?)

You won’t be in the Basketball team, WILL YOU BE?

(To Be) (To Be)
