The “old school” formative assessment that I chose to stick with is the carousel brainstorm. I like
this one because it allows me to check for student knowledge while also allowing them to
interact with one another. In my example students would be working on a Jamboard. In the first
slide I would ask them to list contributing factors of air pollution to ensure that they understood
what was taught the previous lesson. Then, I would ask them to further expand on that
knowledge by asking them provide ways in which we can reduce air pollution in our
communities. After they have written down some ideas, I would then ask them to look at peers
responses and list some challenges and strengths of the ideas that others came up with.
