Cardio-Vascular Disease &

Covid 19

Dr. Prem Raj Baidya MD,MS

Consultant Cardio-Vascular Surgeon
Symptoms
Diagnosis of Covid-19
.

• RDT (rapid diagnostic test) is a medical diagnostic test that is

quick and easy to perform. RDTs are suitable for preliminary
or emergency medical screening .
• PCR (polymerase chain reaction) is a technique in molecular
genetics that permits the analysis of any short sequence of
DNA (or RNA) even in samples containing only minute
quantities of DNA or RNA
Treatment of Covid-19?
• When a disease
is new, there is
no vaccine until
one is developed.
• It can take a
number of years
for a new vaccine
to be developed.
Break the Chain
• Maintain at least 1 metre
(3feet) distance between
yourself and others.

• Why? When someone

coughs, sneezes, or
speaks they spray small
liquid droplets from their
nose or mouth which
may contain virus.

• If you are too close, you

can breathe in the
“Preventive Measures To be taken
By Heart Patients during Corona
Pandemic”
• Wash your hands regularly
with soap and water or clean
with alcohol-based hand rub.

• Maintain at least 1 meter

distance between you and
people coughing or sneezing.

• Avoid touching your face.

• Cover your mouth and nose

when coughing or sneezing.
To prevent infection and transmission of
COVID-19
• Stay home if you feel
unwell

• Refrain from smoking and

other activities that
weaken the lungs

• Practice physical
distancing by avoiding
unnecessary travel and
staying away from large
groups of people
Should coronavirus disease patients
be isolated in hospitals?
• WHO advises that all confirmed cases, even mild cases, should
be isolated in health facilities, to prevent transmission and
provide adequate care.

• But we recognize that many countries have already exceeded

their capacity to care for mild cases in dedicated health
facilities.

• In that situation, countries should prioritize older patients and

those with underlying conditions.
How dangerous is COVID-19?
• Older people, and those with pre- existing medical conditions
(such as high blood pressure, heart problems or diabetes)
appear to be more vulnerable.

• Although for most people (85%) causes only mild illness.

• It can make some people (15%) very ill.

• More rarely (0.02%), the disease can be fatal.

Cardio-Vascular problems in Covid-92
• With acute aortic syndrome or acute pulmonary embolism, must do CT
angiography.

• When acute pulmonary embolism is suspected, D-dimer testing and

deep vein ultrasound can be employed.

• With acute coronary syndrome, electrocardiography and standard

biomarkers for cardiac injury
• Coronary angiography +/- angioplasty
Surgery with Covid 19
• Medical therapy should be optimized in patients with emergent
cardiovascular issues, with invasive strategies for diagnosis and
therapy used "with caution," according to the Chinese experts.

• But before emergency surgery, must do both PCR and RDT.

• After surgery till PCR report comes, must isolate the Patient and the
Surgical team.

• In elective surgery, must do only PCR prior to surgery.

Conclusion
Until we know more,

• 1. strict hand hygiene,

• 2. social distancing,

• 3. Use Mask,

• 4. where available, COVID-19 testing, PCR/RDT

Emergency is always an emergency
• "We need to remind our patients that if they
experience symptoms of a heart attack or
stroke, they deserve the same life-saving
treatment we offered before this pandemic
set in.
• They should not try and sit it out.“

• One of his biggest worries now is that

patients simply won't come.
• Afraid of being exposed to COVID, patients
with MIs and strokes may avoid or delay
coming to the hospital.
