For the parent/adult facilitator:
Welcome to Module 1 of the Grade 4 English Supplementary Learning
Materials for the First Quarter, which focuses on the Parts of a Simple
Paragraph.
This module was collaboratively developed by educators from the public
schools to assist your child to meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum
while overcoming personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.
This learning resource hopes to engage the learners in guided and
independent learning activities that they can do at their own pace and time.
Furthermore, this material also aims to help learners acquire the needed 21st
century skills while taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.
As a parent/adult facilitator, you are expected to help the young learner in
using this module. It would also be helpful for you to keep track of the learner’s
progress while allowing them to manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are
expected to encourage and assist the learners as they do the tasks included in the
module.
Thank you for partnering with your child’s school and teachers in ensuring
that learning will continue in spite of these challenging times.

This module was designed with meaningful and fun activities to help you
learn at your own speed and time. As you use this material, you will see that it has

1. Identify the parts of a simple paragraph: topic sentence (main
idea), supporting details, and closing (concluding) sentence.

calamities. Amidst this COVID-19 pandemic, they help each other to
address the health crisis by providing food and medical supplies to their
front liners, to the poor including people with disabilities and the elderly,
as well as daily wage earners in the informal labor market. They strongly
believe that they have to play their part during these extraordinary
times to immediately help the people who are in need.

What is a sentence?
A sentence is a word or group of words that expresses a
complete thought or idea.
Why are the group of words in numbers 1, 4, 7, 8 and 10 not
sentences?
The group of words are phrases because they express a single
idea but do not form a complete idea or thought.

Now, you are going to read a paragraph about one of our great
women.
She fed the hungry soldiers who came to her house. She gave them
clothes. She took care of the wounded and sick soldiers. She was not
afraid to do all these things. The Katipuneros called her Tandang Sora.

What is it
What is a Paragraph?
A paragraph is made up of sentences that explain or present the
details of a topic. It has three parts:
1. The beginning sentence or the topic sentence, which states the main idea
2. The middle sentences or supporting details, which support the main idea
3. The ending sentence, which summarizes or gives a conclusion
The sentences follow one another from the beginning to the end of the
paragraph.

Honey Bees
Honey bees are insects about ¾ of an inch big. They are
reddish-brown and black with yellow stripes in the abdomen. The
head, legs, and antennae are black. Their thorax is covered with thick
pale hair. The brightly colored bodies of the honey bees act as a
warning to honey robbers.
They live in a hive. A hive accommodates at least 80,000 bees,
most of which are worker bees. The hive is sometimes built in a hole
of a tree. It is ruled by a queen bee. She is the biggest bee in the hive.
Along with her live the bee workers. They do all the work in the hive.
Their tasks include caring for larvae, making wax, building
